January 1, 2001 (2001-01-01) (Monday) Elmo's World starts off with the third season with the premiere episode "Computers," which is the first episode where Elmo receives a video email, as well as the first episode where a film insert is narrated by a child. Israeli-Palestinian conflict: A Hamas suicide car bomber detonates in the city of Netanya, wounding 50. (Jewish Virtual Library) A black monolith measuring approximately nine feet tall appears in Seattle's Magnuson Park, placed by "Some People", a group of anonymous artists; the monolith is in reference to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Greece adopts the euro as its currency. (The Guardian) In the Gregorian calendar and its followers, it was the first day of the new millennium and the new century. January 6, 2001 (2001-01-06) (Saturday) The United States Congress, presided over by Vice President Al Gore as President of the Senate, certifies George Walker Bush's Electoral College victory and thus as the winner of the U.S. presidential election. January 9, 2001 (2001-01-09) (Tuesday) Shenzhou 2, an unmanned Chinese spacecraft, is launched. January 10, 2001 (2001-01-10) (Wednesday) Apple introduce their iTunes digital media player application at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Expo MRT station opened along the Changi Airport branch line of the East West MRT line. January 11, 2001 (2001-01-11) (Thursday) The Federal Trade Commission approved the merger of AOL and Time Warner to form AOL Time Warner. January 13, 2001 (2001-01-13) (Saturday) A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hits all of El Salvador, killing at least 800 people and leaving thousands homeless. January 15, 2001 (2001-01-15) (Monday) Wikipedia, a Wiki free content encyclopedia, goes online. January 17, 2001 (2001-01-17) (Wednesday) Impeachment proceedings against Philippine President Joseph Estrada, accused of playing Jueteng, end preeminently and trigger the second EDSA People Power Revolution or People Power II. His Vice-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo succeeds him as the 14th President of the Republic. January 20, 2001 (2001-01-20) (Saturday) George W. Bush succeeds Bill Clinton as President of the United States after prevailing over Al Gore in the disputed 2000 presidential election. January 23, 2001 (2001-01-23) (Tuesday) Five Falun Gong members set themselves on fire in a protest in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China. However, the incident has been widely disputed by Falun Gong, claiming the incident was staged by the Chinese government in order to make Falun Gong hated in China. The United Nations Security Council have a resolution on the Angolan Civil War, extending the monitoring mechanism of sanctions against UNITA for a further three months. (United Nations) January 24, 2001 (2001-01-24) (Wednesday) The last two of the "Texas 7" are taken into custody in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Following the Hinduja affair, Peter Mandelson is forced to resign from the Government of the United Kingdom for a second time. January 25, 2001 (2001-01-25) (Thursday) A 50-year-old DC-3 crashes near Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, killing 25. January 26, 2001 (2001-01-26) (Friday) An earthquake hits Gujarat, India, killing more than 69,000 people. January 28, 2001 (2001-01-28) (Sunday) Super Bowl XXXV at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida: Baltimore Ravens defeats the New York Giants, 34-7. January 29, 2001 (2001-01-29) (Monday) Thousands of student protesters in Indonesia storm parliament and demand that President Abdurrahman Wahid resign due to alleged involvement in corruption scandals. January 31, 2001 (2001-01-31) (Wednesday) Sega officially announces that they are going to discontinue their Dreamcast system on March 30. They also said that they vowed never to make another video game system ever again and to make only video games. In the Netherlands a Scottish court convicts a Libyan and acquits another for their part in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 which crashed into Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.
