SHORT DESCRIPTION

In order to protect the cultural heritage attributes and values of Willemstad, the HUL approach was used to support the improvement of zoning regulations by examining the official documents from nomination to protection stages.

The monument preservation in Curaçao is applied within three main fields and by their respective institutions and organisations. These fields and the authorities in charge are:

Monument Development Policy; Monuments Council, Monuments Bureau

Co-ordination and Financing; (former) Urban Redevelopment Secretariat, Department  of Urban Planning, Monuments Fund Foundation

Implementation; Willemstad Urban Rehabilitation Corporation, Curaçao Housing Foundation, Curaçao Monuments Foundation, Private owners of monuments

MAIN ACTIVITIES

[1997] Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour was inscribed on the World Heritage List

[2006] The periodic report of ICOMOS referenced several threats that were affecting its state of conservation

[2010] Enhancing the Outstanding Universal Value assessment practices of Willemstad was published in Heritage and Sustainable Development (Volume 1) after the local government partnered in the international research “Outstanding Universal Value, World Heritage cities and Sustainability”

[2011] Presentation in the 6th International Seminar on Urban Conservation in Pernambuco, Brazil

[2011] Master thesis by Aster H. Speckens. Revising world heritage Willemstad : enhancing outstanding universal value assesment practices

[2012] Result of the survey and its following research, Outstanding Universal Value vs. Zoning Regulations in Willemstad.
