Statistics Lithuania: 78.5% of Lithuanians speak at least one foreign language

According to the 2011 National Census, 78.5% of Lithuanians speak at least one foreign language, Statistics Lithuania reports. Since 2001, this number has increased by almost 8 percentage points.
Out of this number, 41.6% speak only one foreign language, 29.0% - two, 6.6% - three, and 1.3% - four or more foreign languages.
Urban residents possess better foreign language skills than their rural compatriots. Thus, 80.8% of the city residents are good at one foreign language in addition to their mother tongue, while this figure stands at 73.8% in rural areas. Men are more likely than women to know one extra language (43.7% and 39.8% respectively).
The most advanced foreign language speakers is Lithuania’s younger generation. According to the census data, 44.7% in the age group of 15-19 years command two foreign languages, while 15.4% in the age group of 25-29 years can speak three and more.
63.0% of Lithuanians speak Russian, 30.4% - English, 8.5% - Polish, and 8.3% - German. Generation factor still matters a lot, as English and German are most popular among the youth. Almost half of the total population who could speak English was 15-29 years old, while every third citizen who could speak Russian and Polish was 40-54 years old.
