Roberto Firmino scored a dramatic extra-time winner as Liverpool beat Flamengo 1-0 to lift the Club World Cup in Doha.

Liverpool have made a habit of scoring late goals this season and they left it until the 99th minute on Saturday evening as Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane combined brilliantly to find Firmino on the edge of the box.

The Brazilian, whose injury-time strike against Monterrey sent Liverpool into the final, cut back and made no mistake from close range to secure victory for the Reds.

After losing their previous final appearance to Sao Paulo in 2005, Liverpool become only the second English team to win the Club World Cup after Manchester United managed it back in 2008.

The Merseyside giants are also the first English side to complete the continental treble by winning the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Flamengo impressed in the early stages at the Khalifa International Stadium, with Bruno Henrique causing Trent-Alexander Arnold problems down the right flank in a frustrating first half for the European champions.

Jurgen Klopp’s men came close to breaking the deadlock right after half-time as Firmino struck the post before Alisson produced a sublime save to deny Gabriel Barbosa in the 54th minute.

Referee Abdulrahman Al Jassim appeared to hand Liverpool a golden chance to win the game in normal time as he pointed towards the penalty spot in the 91st minute.

However, Al Jassim overturned his initial decision after consulting with the video assistant referee and the yellow card Rafinha was shown for his challenge on Sadio Mane was rescinded.

Flamengo pressed for an equaliser to cancel out Firmino’s strike but ultimately had no answer.

It’s Liverpool’s third piece of silverware in just six months following their Champions League and Super Cup triumphs last term.
