Joe Louis-Max Schmeling Movie Project Seeks Crowdfunding

23 March 2016 2:58 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The producers of a biopic on boxer Joe Louis have launched a crowdfunding campaign for the project.

Bill Duke, Gil Adler and Joel Eisenberg, who unveiled the project in November in to Variety, started the $200,000 campaign on Wednesday on the Seed and Spark site.

“By crowdfunding the development of the property and further, possibly some pre-production financing, we hope to mitigate some finance risk by bringing a fully developed property to the funding entities,” Eisenberg said.

The untitled project will focus on Louis’ historic two fights with German boxer Max Schmeling. Louis became a symbolic figure in boxing during early global tensions leading to World War II, becoming among the first U.S. black cultural heroes. Schmeling was exploited as Hitler’s German Superman, but had no love for the Nazi regime.

Their two fights took place in Yankee Stadium. Schmeling handed Louis his first loss in their first fight »

New York Times bestselling creative team John Layman and Rob Guillory will unleash the final one-shot chronicling the action-packed exploits of the beloved homicidal cybernetic kung-fu rooster this April with the release of Demon Chicken Poyo from Image Comics.

“Several years ago Rob Guillory and I changed the face of comics, and indeed all pop culture, with the release of Secret Agent Poyo,” said Layman. “They said it could not be done, but we followed that up with an even more vital, timely and sense-shattering sequel, Warrior Chicken Poyo. And here, we’ve done the unthinkable, as we’ve outdone ourselves Yet Again with our greatest triumph yet, Demon Chicken Poyo.”

“We expect this book to shake the very foundations of the comics industry, with a comic so astonishing and impossibly amazing that the world will be forever altered,” Layman added. “Religions will be formed around this comic. Monuments will be built. »

Deadpool, and the box office of R-rated comic book films

Deadpool's opening weekend proves that people will turn out R-rated comic book movies. But they have been doing since the 1970s...

Deadpool – an X-Men spin-off for Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Merc With The Mouth’ - is in cinemas now, and in spite of its R-rated tag, it's shattered the box office ceiling for February releases with a stunning $260m global opening weekend. Maybe this is the point where Hollywood realises that if it makes the right R-rated movie - Deadpool, rather than Jonah Hex - people will turn up.

That R stands for Restricted, meaning that under-17s in America will havehad  to be accompanied by an adult if they wanted to see Deadpool in cinemas this weekend. It’s a 15-certificate film to me and other denizens of the British Isles, meaning that no under-15s this side of the pond will be permitted to see it in cinemas. »
