The Star Wars lady highlights the main reason why I haven't had any ambition to go to a big convention. I don't want to plan a schedule around waiting for hours just to try to get into the panel room. It's pretty nice to be able to walk in shortly before it starts, or to switch to another panel if one turns out to be boring.

Sorry Maybell, but that other girl had been there for several years and had an established following. She deserved what she got as opposed to the other patrons who mostly lost out due to underhanded means.

Still it's not like I haven't been there too I suppose so yeah, it's worth at least one drink.

They weren't comparing who dererves more pitty, they were comparing who got sucker-punched by life. Her situation, while not unfair, totally sucked more.

The bright side to Maybell's bad luck at the Artist's Alley: at least she's not the only one who has it. Smile Here's hoping she'll have better luck at the next con...

Once again this comic proves to be a great and compelling slice of life series to me.
I can totally sympathize with them all even though I do agree that Maybell situation is by far the least sympathetic, I can totally understand her needing some drinks before going back to her art and trying to make it as (More then likely) good and popular as the girl at the booth next to her.

Store-bought costumes have quite a nasty reputation of being able to win costume and cosplay contests, especially the local-level ones. Based on what people say, the easiest way to win a Halloween costume contest, for instance, is buy pumpkin-themed costumes from Party City or Spirit or somesuch.

That's what I've noticed--people who've been there for many years in a row, even if they've been unprofitable, slowly build recognition and will eventually start getting profitable. At least, that's how it is for the ones I've been to and of the artists I've known.

Nevertheless, that situation is incredibly demoralizing if you're witnessing it--and even if your unacknowledged rival has seniority, it pretty much means all that work you've put into your book was for nothing.

I feel that part of that is also Maybell's own fault. Instead of lying about her work she should have stood by it, maybe asked to swap copies with the more popular girl. Maybe that girl will like Maybell's work and tell her customers "Hey, if you like my work check out the table next to me!"

I think this should have been nicknamed "One of the Best Parts of this Comic".

Anyone who has run into problems with convention hogs can relate.

She obviously is to scared and nervous to do that but yes by far that is what she should have done if for no other reason then to be able to read her rivals book.
