There's some evidence that the "Bodacious Space Pirates" name was even designed for the English-speaking anime market... after all, the original light novel's title translates to "Miniskirt Space Pirates"!

I remember reading the manga for elemental gelade and I had no idea that the english name replaced the "L"'s with "R"'s lol.
I never got into Bleach but was there ever any explanation as to what that title was suppose to mean or why the author named it such? |

I always felt like "Bodacious Space Pirates" was supposed to be a kind of silly and out dated but fitting title.
I consider "Bubblegum Crisis" to be the strangest most out of place title. "Kiddy Grade" is a runner up. |

I speak both English and Arabic fluently, and in both languages I love orderly, grammatically sound, well constructed sentences and titles. Being an anime fan, with all the weird names and funky punctuation, it's a torture.
The other trend that really bothered me a few years back was the synopses for title.
My guess if that if the Bleach goes on long enough spoiler[ we'll find out that Ichigo is part bucket of bleach, since he's part everything.] |

Let's not forget the 800 pound gorilla of awkward titles for recent popular anime.
Attack on Titan. |

Every time I hear "Bodacious Space Pirates" I always mentally add "DUDE!" to the title, Bill & Ted style.
Manga, yes, but isn't "BLAME!" supposed to be "BLAM!" (as in gunshot)? "Kiddy Grade" is an unfortunate title as it smacks somewhat of Jimmy Saville's ranking system. Though "Titles that give you the wrong impression" is another subject, |

It's definitely awkward, but probably not because of why you think so. spoiler[It's not supposed to be "Attack of the Titans" or anything similar.] Honestly, I absolutely love not-grammatically-correct titles as long as they sound cool. Attack on Titan, for example, really rolls off the tongue. I'm also sure that sometimes the creators are well aware that they're not entirely correct. The Japanese just love to play with language. |

I think King 47's reasoning came close. IIRC, actually implied but not clearly stated, Kubo Tite had intended main character Ichigo to acquire all power types that were available in the story. But yeah, I don't recall it was directly stated. Reading this article made me realize just how much I've gotten used to weird anime titles. It's scary. |

I've noticed that the trend of wordy light novel titles has also resulted in a trend of much shorter titles that are easier to remember and use in conversation.

Why is Turn-A Gundam the thumbnail picture for the article? That name actually makes perfect sense. Also, I did see Turn-A mentioned for odd punctuation, but does using a greek letter count as punctuation?
Really? Because that it totally what the Japanese title is (except it doesn't necessarily need to be plural). |

Attack on Titans Attack of Titans Titan Attack Not trying to second guess what the purpose of the title was supposed to be beyond imperfect grasp of a foreign language. I also considered the difference in the way singular/plural distinction is made in Asian languages. |

The original English name for SukaSuka, that anime that aired last season, was:
"Do you have what THE END? Are you busy? Shall you save xxx?" I find that hilarious. |

If it means anything to readers here, the Chinese title for "Bleach" is 净化 which loosely translates to "purification". Considering the whole premise of the series from the little I've read about it is about "Soul Society" and what to do with the aberrations which threaten the peace of the afterworld, what probably happened was the Japanese creator of the franchise thinking about a catchy English title to describe the whole franchise and using the wrong word from a thesaurus or Japanese-to-English translator.
Odd as the title is for native English speakers, there's no denying any stigma that used to be attached to the title for its improper usage of the noun has long since been forgiven by fans of the series. |
