My favorite piece of this series has always been Lagendra, the sarcastic jerk of an artificially intelligent starship.

I remember seeing a bit of the dub at Mike's Dubs panel at Otakon 2009 and thinking the Apullo's dub voice reminded me of Cat from Red Dwarf.
Anybody else hear it, or was it just me? |

I'm probably the only person who absolutely loves this one. Saw it back in the mid-2000s. I guess there's no room for old and jaded 80s fans these days.
...also, I kind of wonder if the creators of Space Dandy didn't think about this show when they created the characters... |

Absolutely loved this series. It had me in stitches the entire time I was watching. Legendra is my absolute favourite especially when he was turned into a cat, the thing he hated most in the galaxy. Soundtrack is awesome as well. I think I want to watch it again!

At last we get to The Enemy's the Pirates; the English dub of this as Galactic Pirates has to be heard to be believed!
Some choice observations about the dubbed UK VHS release: - It is one of the all-time best examples of an ADR script that clearly wasn't written by a native English speaker that I've ever heard. A somewhat convoluted plot in the original Japanese becomes genuinely nigh-on incomprehensible in the English-dubbed version. - References to the funny High Speed talk that Latell is capable of were kept in the dubbed version, even though these sequences themselves (freeze frames with text) were cut out of the dubbed episodes! This was presumably since Western Connection, whose subtitle timing abilities seen on their other releases was always exceptionally poor, couldn't competently add in English-translated text over those freeze frames. - Parts of the audio briefly cut out on the dubbed version of the final episode; this was an issue at the replication stage (yes, I bought more than one copy of the original tape to confirm this!). Another example of Western Connection's now-infamous "QC skills". - The VHS cases for all three volumes of the Galactic Pirates releases carried the UK 18-only rating (all UK home video releases to this day requiring mandatory ratings by law), despite the first two episodes themselves officially being rated at the 15-only level, while the remaining four were only rated PG! While "fifteening" as a UK anime release practice was well-known, why Western Connection employed eighteening with a release like this, which in no way could be mistaken for an ultraviolent or salacious title, is still something of a mystery. Despite Western Connection's almost innumerable shortcomings with regard their releases, it's still kind of impressive that The Enemy's the Pirates, along with many of their other anime releases, such as Ladius, God Bless Dancougar, The Sensualist, Samurai Gold, and Salamander has never officially been released in English by any other licensor to date, some twenty years later.
Frankly, I always thought this is exactly what the dubbing team was going for. The series was dubbed early enough in the 1990s during a time when Red Dwarf was popular enough to be a consistent high-ratings winner on original broadcast, and actually supported a short-lived monthly magazine. It's still jaw-dropping voice direction in retrospect, and a great example of an English-dubbing characterization that wouldn't even have been considered in the US. |

You present a pretty convincing hypothesis. This was a UK dub, so it being intentional they sound alike does seem very possible and at the very least now I am confident that I wasn't just completely missing the mark on how similar they sounded. After the panel I think I actually asked Mike if maybe it actually was Danny John-Jules doing the voice, but he didn't seem to think so. |

YES, I absolutely LOVE this show!
Great animation, ridiculous story, and a rocking soundtrack! If you like 80's hair rock, go look look up "Air Pavilion - It's Only Love" on Youtube. You will not be disappointed! |

Review: Mary and the Witch's Flower

Answerman - Why Is Anime Dialogue Recorded After Animation Is Done?
anime
DIalogue for many Western cartoons is recorded before animation is done; in Japan, the animation is done first. Why is that? Justin gets into it.
― James asks: Some time ago, you stated that one of the major differences between western animation and Japanese animation is that, in western animation, all dialogue is recorded first, and then the animation is done to match the dialogue, while, in Japane...

The Mike Toole Show - Searching for Star Blazers

It's a top-shelf, lavish remake of a smash hit sci-fi anime series many Western fans would love to get their hands on - so why did Mike have to import it from Italy to watch it legally?
