Plot Summary:
This is the story of the Joestar family, and their battles against bizarre enemies. Jonathan Joestar's battle against the vampire Dio Brando starts it all, and it continues into roughly each second generation of Joestars through all parts of the story.

Though this is one manga series, so far there have been six distinct story arcs, each with a different setting and stock of characters. They are as follows:
Part I - Jonathan Joestar in 1880 England (Volumes 1-4)
Part II - Josef Joestar in 1937 New York (Volumes 5-12)
Part III - Jotaro Kujo in early 1989 Egypt (Volumes 13-28)
Part IV - Josuke Higashikata in 1999 (Volumes 29-45)
Part V - Giorno Giovanni in early 2000s Italy (Volumes 46-63)
Part VI: Stone Ocean - Jolyne Kujo in 2011 Florida (Volumes 64-80)
Viz's release of JoJo skips the first twelve volumes and jumps right into the third story arc with Jotaro Kujo (upon which the anime is based).
