In an effort to prevent the spread of African swine fever from Belarus, Lithuania begins slaughtering all pigs within a distance of around 10 kilometers from the border.

Jonas Milius, director of the Lithuanian State Food and Veterinary Service, has signed an order giving residents of all districts bordering Belarus until December 1 to slaughter their pigs.

"The Agriculture Ministry is now working on a reimbursement mechanism. We are waiting for it to be completed," he told BNS.

Reportedly, the extermination of pigs may cost about 10 million litas (EUR 3m), with 30 percent of the costs to be covered by the European Commission, whose representatives plan to check this month how Lithuania is putting in place safety measures.
