More machine translation of the Japanese website info on the characters on display. It's poorly written in some places so I'm offering my own translation for the character biographies for anyone interested. Changes are highlighted in bold.
Albedo: One of the NPCs who served the Supreme 41, she is Master of the guardians of the Nazarik Underground Cemetery hence she stands at the apex of the NPC hierarchy. Although her appearance is worthy of ranking amongst the great beauties of all time, she now has an extremely unfortunate aspect embedded into her personality because of Momonga's manipulation of part of her data settings. Shalltear bloodfallen: One of the NPCs serving the Supreme 41, and the guardian of levels 1-3 of the Nazarik underground cemetery. A vampire by another name, her outward appearance as a young girl belies her pride as the strongest of the level guardians in one-on-one combat. She has a peculiar hobby and loves Momonga from the bottom of her heart. Aura Bella Fiora: One of the NPCs serving the Supreme 41, and the guardian of level 6 of Nazarik underground cemetery. A girl of striking appearance because of heterochromia, she wears men's clothing because of the whims of the player who created her. Always cheerful and bright. Mare is her younger twin brother. Mare Bello Fiora: One of the NPCs serving the Supreme 41, and the guardian of level 6 of Nazarik underground cemetery. A boy with heterochromia just like Aura forced to wear women's clothing because of the whims of his creator. Weak-willed and always timid, he cannot disobey his elder twin sister, Aura. Demiurge: One of the NPCs serving the Supreme 41, and the guardian of level 7 of Nazarik underground cemetery. His unparalleled intelligence involves him with the myriad strategies and plans concerning Nazarik. He has sworn absolute loyalty to Momonga and will show no mercy to any who would stand in his way, even if the interlocutors hail from Momonga's inner circle. Cocytus: One of the NPCs serving the Supreme 41, and the guardian of Level 5 of Nazarik underground cemetery. An aberration guardian bearing an imposing frame; the impression he gives to those who behold him is of a bipedal insect. His speech and manner are befitting of a warrior and he will always show respect to any foe bearing a warrior's indomitable spirit, no matter how lowly that foe's status may be. Sebas tian: One of the NPCs serving the Supreme 41, and the butler of Nazarik underground cemetery. He wields command over the battle maid squad "Pleiades". His responsibilities grant him equal status with the other guardians, nor is he inferior in combat to them either. He is also noble and perceives the salvation of the weak as just and worthy. Ironic that the reviewers on this website have on the whole judged the first episode as trash and cliched, yet this series ends up on the Anime Spotlight feature. |

You do realize that news/press releases (like the Anime Spotlight) is separate from editorial (like the Preview Guide), yes? |

The Preview Team chewed on Overlord, and I can't see how they got their impressions.

so from the first episode of overlord
what i got from it is a guy who spent most of his time in an MMORPG ended up stuck in it? not the "must watch" type of series for me.... but since i'm new to this series.. i'll give it a few more episodes also... I think there are 2 games on the ps3 for this Overlord series.. |

Similar but different. The games are about a fantasy world were the player is a leader with minions, and the objective is to, well, be a villain. |

If that's indeed the case, it's akin to the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. I personally think such an arrangement is contradictory since the same website promotes one series to readers yet slams it with a different team once the first episode is aired. |

Two 3.5's and two 2's isn't exactly what I'd call a chewing. Hell, two of those are bigger than the community score (3.2 at this time)
Just because the reviewing staff may dislike a show doesn't mean the community or readers would. I wouldn't take any kind of reviewing as "the website promotes one series" at all, it's just opinion pieces. |

They went pretty hard for its settings, though. Way more than any high-school life show premiering this Season. |

Wouldn't have known this show even existed had I not seen the spotlight article. I also don't think the spotlight accurately communicated the story details all that well either.
Anyways, I really liked the first episode. I've been playing Final Fantasy 11 for almost 10 years now and even before that, have sat through numerous versions of Phantasy Star Online being shut down. Most of those happened before heavy social networking was a thing, and lots of friends got lost in the process. Overlord brought me back to those memories and I was tearing up a bit even at the start of the show thinking about all of the people I've met & parted with. FF11 is stopping console service and going into maintenance mode soon so at some point, I'll be forced to say goodbye to everything when the game inevitably shuts down. I'm looking forward to seeing where Overlord's story goes. So far, it feels a bit more "realistic" in tone, at least in the thought process and reactions that the main character has. Even though I've watched (and enjoyed) DOT.hack, Sword Art, and Log Horizon, I think Overlord will wind up being just as enjoyable so long as they take it in more of a "Demon King Maoyu" direction & keep the moe/fanservice moments to a minimum. |

I agree with the reviews inasmuch as it's not a new topic in general, but there is some promise here and it does deserve at least another episode or two before I'll decide to drop it or continue. |

Based on the first episode, it seems like this has potential. I just hope they don't turn it into another harem show, since it looks like that's also a possibility based on the character descriptions.

Please tag source material spoilers as such. -Galap spoiler[You don't really have to worry about that. The twins look to him more like the best dad who they never ever ever want to disappoint while Shalltear and Albedo fight a bit, but it never goes anywhere really and plays a very small part of the over all story. Really though, all of the Guardians and residence of the Great Tomb of Nazzarick are obsessed with his approval and attention, male and female. Their terrified of the thought of losing the last of their Creators (since all the other guild members have, in their eyes, abandoned them) while Momonga is terrified of losing the Tomb and it's residence which he see's as the final legacy and children of his old friends (since he really only made one NPC himself he you don't meet till much later).] |

to be honest i really like this new series, it has a very SAO vibe to it which i now vehemently hate because of the huge (anti)climax of the first part of the first season. I could go on for ages but here is neither the time nor place so i'll just say it 'feels' similar. Where it shines though is that the MC or momonga is an 'adult' with some (ok alot) otakuish qualities. I dont want to spoil the series and im not even sure how far the anime will animate spoiler[i sincerely hope we see beyond the shalltear betrayal Arc] but his mindset, train of thought and even methods of doing things seems really practical and is what i enjoyed out of it. If i had to liken him to another character i'd say he reminds me of shiroe of log horizon but completely cold hearted and willing to do anything to further his goals. Of course its not without its faults like the boob feeling scene(i found entertaining but over the top) and im sure the spoiler[loli vampire thing wont sit well with some viewers]but its worth it despite its cliches.

probably an action/fantasy type of series.. users in an online game... .hack and log horizon come to mind.. imo.. harem by itself can still provide a good story.. .... unless you add in fan service and ecchi... series like Air, Kanon, Clannad, monogatari, etc.. are qualified as harem?.. .. |
