Great article. Rakugo and Kabukibu have definitely increased my appreciation for their respective art forms, the former especially. Kabukibu is better than I thought at first, but I think the main reason I'm watching it is to learn about Kabuki.
I don't know that Hanamaru has done the same for traditional swordmaking for me personally, but the franchise has clearly had a positive effect on the art form, which is a great thing. I am excited to see ufotable's iteration of the franchise though. One small correction:
Studio DEEN was the one that made Rakugo, not I.G. |

So far, I've observed that the average Japanese person has no interest in any of things mentioned in article. They're like akin to say the Opera and watching live orchestra, takes years of training and skill but really it's an acquired taste and expensive as well...

Munechika and Kiyomitsu made me finally break down and buy my first (and second) figure. Yasusada will soon be my third. And I didn't even like the anime much, nor do I know jack about the game.
Only a handful of series have moved units like Tōken Ranbu did. It nearly gave Yuuri a run for its money. But Rakugo can't move any units on this side of the pond until somebody licenses it (I guess CR has the first season, but they're just sitting on it?)! What are they waiting for? It wasn't just critically well-regarded, it also ended up on viewer top ten lists as well. They don't even need to dub it - probably better if they don't try. Just get a really good translator and take my money!! This is admittedly a niche series, but that's exactly why the longer they wait to release it, the less it will sell. Did no one learn anything from how Viz killed Monster by shelving it for 5 years (among other blunders)? Sentai has apparently picked up Kabukibu already. As much as I'm enjoying that series, I'm going to be really deranged if it makes it out the door before Rakugo does. They'll hear my banshee wail from CA to TX. |

Don't forget the popularity of Chihayafuru, and its focus on the traditional Japanese card game karuta, which got multiple anime seasons, stage plays, and movie adaptations.

To quote a reply the user made to their own tweet a couple posts down "The #RakugoShinju production committee was King Records (Starchild label for S1), Kodansha and MBS. Studio DEEN didn't 'risk' anything." The production committee are the ones that invested/risked the money. They're the ones hurt most when a series flops. On a major news website for anime/manga and related interests, that is a an extremity ignorant mistake to make. It's no wonder people have no idea what's going on with the industry when this is one of the leading news sources people rely on for to stay informed. Feeding a decades old misconception. Unless the studio itself is part of the production committee, they risked nothing and stand to gain comparatively little to nothing from an anime's success or failure money wise. It's no wonder people seems to forget they exist considering in the west all simulcasts and of course home video releases deliberately cut that after OP reminder out. Think hard readers. When was the last anime you watched where "This work is brought to you be the following companies" with them being listed on screen was included in the episode? |

My Monster Secret GN 4
manga
My Monster Secret runs through a bevy of romcom staples in its fourth volume, bringing some personality to potentially tired stories. Nick Creamer digs in.
― My Monster Secret has established its romcom platform at this point. Having started off with the classic will-they-or-won't-they bond between Asahi and Shiragami, the manga has proceeded to introduce the requisite romantic rivals, perverted frie...
The List - 7 Brother-Sister Romances That Went Too Far
anime
Things get incestuous in this edition of The List, with seven couples who might be a little TOO close for comfort.
― This week, we're talking about the elephant in the anime viewing room. It's a particular type of "forbidden relationship" that crops up on a pretty regular basis, where dudes have a chance at sleeping with their sisters. I'm not going to pretend to know why this trope is common beyond...

Answerman - Why Is It Socially Unacceptable To Be An Otaku In Japan?
anime
Generally speaking, Japanese society still shuns the otaku - why is that? Justin has a few ideas.
― James asks: I have seen a rather large number of anime and manga series in recent years in which a character (either male of female) is extremely popular and successful at school and with their friends, but hides the fact that they are an otaku (approximately the Japanese equivalent of a nerd in weste...
Rakugo Shinju, Kabukibu and The Traditional Arts of Japan
anime
From Touken Ranbu to Kabukibu to Rakugo Shinju, anime has been embracing Japanese traditional arts more than ever. Lynzee Loveridge examines the phenomenon.
― Japan is a country with a very old cultural history, dating back millennia before what we consider modern U.S. history. Those millennia produced a wealth of traditional art forms, ranging from the graceful strokes of shodo (calligraphy) to the ...
Dreamin' Sun GN 1

This earlier work from the creator of Orange isn't quite as polished, but it combines an honest look at depression and anger with shoujo romance tropes in interesting ways. Rebecca Silverman has the details.
― Originally published in Margaret magazine in 2007, a transfer of rights to a new publisher has resulted in a re-release of Ichigo Takano's Dreamin' Sun and its translation into English. (Takano...

Prince of Stride: Alternative BD+DVD
anime
This otome game adaptation eschews most reverse harem tropes in a surprisingly fun story about a bizarre blend of track and parkour. Rebecca Silverman gets into this show's Stride.
― If you were wondering, the “alternative” in Prince of Stride Alternative comes from the fact that this 2016 series is based on a 2015 otome game simply called Prince of Stride. That's mildly surprising, because the show ...
Answerman - Why Isn't More Anime Shown On American TV?
anime
There are countless hours of US cable television programming to fill, and yet only a few hours a week are filled with anime. Why is that? Justin gets into it.
― Kyle asks: How come some English dubbed anime only get released straight to DVD here in the US and never air on American TV? I know that a handful of them do air on Anime-only channels, such as the FUNimation Channel and Neon Alley, and also...
