A question from a fan of both the original move and Stand alone complex:
Does Tow Ubukata's ideals and views on the world have a significant impact on if I would enjoy the movie or not. Ubukata's views on Science Fiction already caused a problem when it clashed with the first Psycho Pass season's ideals and views. As such, i want to ask if Ubukata's views cause a similar conflict with the original movie and series? |

I like how people give a man made interface like the Major, a gender. The ghost has said on numerous occasions it prefers a female aesthetic. It's disturbing nearly every female Shirow has illustrated is usually a sextoy, very few of his creations have gotten the demanded respect Kusanagi commands so i kinda look the other way.
The AAA Podcast hosts got into it about that. Which was funny (The show I "hate listen" to) I'm going after that Dororo set. Didn't think Earl and Fairy would see daylight again. Those shelves are nice, if I didn't have to move like a refugee every year I would have had some sweet shelves too. The Oshii Gits movie busts are slick. I hadn't seen those before. |

I like the Arise continuity more than great deal of other people, who dislike it simply for not being SAC, but I have to admit that every episode, when you boil it down, has the same basic plot: government official tries to cover up illegal weapon sales or other misdeed during the war years, and it somehow catches the attention of Kusanagi and/or Section 9. It's never the crime itself, always the cover up. The movie is not a lot different, and I feel like any attempt to differentiate it from the episodes only make it lesser, especially that twist towards the end which seems phoned in. It still has all the basic themes and plot elements I enjoyed from SAC, and in much the same way, but it always makes me wonder why they bothered with yet another continuity when nothing new it has to offer quite justifies that. I'll probably end up getting the movie, because it is, in the end, a worthwhile watch for what it is, but it's a pretty low priority.

I've seen both Psycho Pass 2 and the ARISE OAVs/TV show, and I found it incredibly bizarre how outright WRONG he gets the world/themes of Psycho PASS, while getting Ghost in the Shell relatively right. That said, his take on GitS is not as thought provoking as SAC was. ARISE is a head scratcher, but more in a plot way than a philosophical way. It makes for a decent sci-fi political thriller, but I think it's best not to compare it to the rest of the franchise, because it will come up short (that's just how great SAC was). If you liked Mardock Scramble (Ubukata's best known prior work), then this is sort of similar, except more political and less grimdark. Also, there are no gay dolphins in ARISE. I imagine there are probably complaints that character personalities are changed in ARISE compared to SAC and the movies. You might have to remind yourself that ARISE is a separate entity and not "canon" (or you could say it's its own separate canon). But, I didn't find anything that completely ran antithesis to how I previously new the characters, so it was not a big deal. Like, they didn't make the Major into a pretty Magical Girl or anything. (Although now that I said that, I'd kill to see that in a Tachikoma/Logikoma special) |

Definitely getting Cromartie High School at some point. It never gets old for me. I'd like to watch Earl and Fairy at some point since I never got around to finishing it the first time I tried watching it.

@DrunkAyanami
Arise is not the only one that has its own continuity or canon. They all do. The first movie differs significantly from the first manga series. The .5 and 2.0 manga series go in a seriously different direction from the second movie. The two SAC series and related movies go back to the manga for some plot episodes but establish their own continuity and canon. Arise does have its differences but is at least as compatible with the manga as SAC is. In one of the extras to the New Movie the Japanese director makes the point that Arise is the fourth version of Ghost in the Shell. |

Yea, thanks for pointing this out. I didn't mean to imply that there is one "correct version" (did my post come off this way? I did say that ARISE could be looked at as a stand alone work, no pun intended). Everything is its own separate canon, although it is fair to say that some iterations fit together better than others. For example, my own personal head-canon tells me that the first movie fits in well with SAC. ARISE, on the otherhand, gives completely different back stories to Section 9 and messes with personalities, making it harder to fit within the GitS franchise. ...and by the time the GitS 2 manga came out, Shirow had kind of sorta already transitioned into full on porn art. So that sort of came with its own baggage. So yea, "separate canons" is fine with me. But SAC was by far my favorite interpretation, so clearly I am biased towards it. Maybe we can argue about something with an easier timeline, like Zelda or something? |

I just want to say, those ARE some awesome shelves. I love that you don't alphabetize things (I don't like to do that with mine either) and seem to place everything just where it looks best naturally. The Hell Girl stuff is awesome too. I love that character, and would suggest you check out the manga for Vampire Princess Miyu (unless it was in there somewhere and I missed it. Fail on my part.
