I always imagined CG to be the future of anime once it becomes refined. Although it won't be any easier than working using traditional hand-drawn means, I feel that at least shows will look consistent because the team will be using pre-built models so that for each frame they will look the same without any dip in quality. I think fast paced shows could benefit from it. Right now many shows dabble in using CG however, I think in time we'll see more CG shows. I don't think it will ever replace hand-drawn work though.
Still, they were behind Transformers: Prime? The later seasons had some really fluid animations and was a great show as a whole. |

I hope that in the near future all anime does not look like Knights of Sidonia and Ajin. If that happens, I would be done watching and buying anime. Sorry, I love traditional 2D animation.

I personally think that people exaggerate the "poor" quality of Knights of Sidonia's animation. I thought it was fine! I absolutely prefer polygon's style of CG animation to what's typically mixed with 2D animation, like the terrible low-fps CG monsters you see in shows like Overlord.
I haven't Blame! yet (i have no excuse...), but each image i see from the film looks amazing. In only 3 years, that's a massive and impressive improvement. I'm hoping there will be an improvement in CG animation similar to that in the US, where we went from the original Toy Story to Zootopia, in a fraction of the time. If this prompts a change in the absurd workload and hours animation studios force on their employees, that's all the better. |

I've finished the first season of Ajin, and watched Blame! as soon as it came out. While still noticeably 3D-animated, it's come a long way. Even something like RWBY has improved greatly over the last few years. I still vastly prefer hand-drawn animation, but I don't doubt there will eventually be technology that can duplicate the quality of hand-drawn. I don't expect it will be soon, but that's the path it's going, and really, given the state of the anime industry, that's the way it's got to go. Hand-drawn is just too expensive, in manpower and money, to keep up the volume coming out now. (Then again, perhaps a decrease in volume could be a good thing, given some of the derivative crap being produced these days.)

Unfortunately, the CGI i prefer when it comes to anime is the one that the Appleseed movies use (though the CGI used in Vexille, PlanZet works as well though PlanZet treads uncanny valley levels). Sure its not in the "anime" style but i think that is fine. I dont mind when the CGI is used to create backgrounds/vehicles/props like the CGI tanks in Girls-Und-Panzer.
Also a question for those who have recently watched any Polygon picture anime: Is their animation done fluidly and shown in 30/60 fps? I know there are other attempts of Anime-CGI like the Expelled from Paradise movie where each frame is around 3 frames per second in anime. I think one of the strengths in CGI is that you can animate things as smooth and in any frame rate you'd like since you aren't drawing each frame individually. |

I think CGI i really great when used correct. but the way they have low framerate to match 2D animation is really bad. I myself love hand drawn animation to death and i don't want it to change. But having a really good background made with CGI is really good. I just love how good metal objects look with CGI. In any case i think CGI looks the best when used with Inanimate object. Living things like human or animals etc. doesn't really look good with the CG they do now.
But if the anime is full CGI i would love if they did it like studio Orange that are really good doing 3D anime, and i'm really looking forward to what they're going to do with their own project upcoming this year. |

Good way of thinking, because honestly, if it's for anime fans, Japan will never progress in the animation industry. So many productions have problems making anime 2D series and it shows on off-model shots, or backgrounds lacking detail, that the 3D approach becomes a necessity. But for Polygon, more than that, it's a challenge. The things is that viewers want every anime product in 2D as an obligation. We want the studios to make 2D or nothing. I'm in the opposite side of the spectrum. More 3D productions please! That fear that 3D is going to overtake 2D is an stupidity, because it took like 10 years or so for it to happen in the US. Japan can last more, but it's not going to happen. Still, it's a good thing that more 3D productions are happening.
UNFORTUNATELY, for how is Japan economically, making a movie with that or Gantz:O's level of 3D take a BIG. ASS. LOAD. of money to be done, and they don't always have the money to make it. Do you or anyone buy these 3D projects when they're released on DVD? If not, then 3D like Polygon or Sanzigen is what it'll be more released. Just think about it. |

Is it? Back in the days of N64 and Playstation 1, making 3D sprites was expensive and required expensive new tech, but nowadays making something of that quality would be cheaper and faster. Heck even Pixar's Toy Story 1 could be made cheaper today. Making stuff in 3D should be cheaper because you aren't animating every frame, and one of the benefits of 3D is that you can use the models/assets as much and in anyway you want. The reason why 2D anime better because the animators are paid in dirt. However that said, going 3D is an uphill battle, since you NEED to continually look better and because they age worse than the 2D animation. Im sure Japanese 3D animation will be cheaper and more experienced. Naturally im not asking Appleseed Alpha level. Just something like the Appleseed 2004 movie or Vexille is okay for me. Polygon picture's stuff already looks better than those, its just the character work that probably needs more detail. The appleseed XIII anime was decent in my opinion. Though its i would've preferred Micott & Basara's look of Deunan, but they went bankrupt before Genesis ( a 26-episode anime). Also, yes i do buy those 3D projects, i used to own the 2004 and Ex:Machina dvd. That said, i agree with what you say. Though it'd be nice without the pointed argument. |

I don't think so. Kemono Friends wasn't the peak of 3DCGI at any era but it was smash hit anime. |

I've probably liked Polygon's work the best when it comes to CG anime and it's nice to see them improving. While I wouldn't want all anime to be CG, I wouldn't mind seeing more such anime and it being used to lighten the load with regard to some aspects of 2D anime so animators don't have to work crazy hours for poor pay and give them more time to do their best work. With time I hope that CG anime can, if not be on par with 2D, at least be considered respectable within most of the community. Hopefully Polygon can earn that respect.

I agree, i hpe it will not expand in popularity and we don't have to remember the pokemon incident with CG animation. I just saw the saint saiya movie too and i think it's a mess! |

I've seen their work on the newest TF series and Ajin. I think it's a matter of what the scene calls for. But I'm not entirely sure either. I think for the former, since it blends in 2D elements like smears and other effects, I think they have to actually do the timing manually. Ajin, as far as I know, is completely CG. But again, I don't know how much of it is timed ala RiD 2015, or frameskipped like most 3DCG anime aping 2D animation tend to be. |

As far as CG anime go, I don't want to see any more of them because of how bad it looks to me. I think it's a tragedy that good stories can be brought down by the animation so hard. I have nothing against a studio using CG because it is their best available option (I love RWBY) but if the only reason to use it is to cut costs Im wholeheartedly against it.

Kemono Friends didn't win because of its art department, it won despite it. When you have a handful of utterly dedicated people working long hours a whole year on something on a shoestring budget, trying to make every penny count and knowing full well no-one's really expecting anything great come out of it, miracles may happen... |
