The Lego Batman Movie Leads The Way For Golden Trailer Awards

21 hours ago | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Though some people may be unaware, there’s an awards ceremony held every year to honor the true heroes behind our favorite films: the marketing team. That’s right, the Golden Trailer Awards hand out statues to those who work tirelessly putting together trailers, commercials and posters for hundreds of releases each and every year. And not just in film, but video games and TV, too. It’s an incredibly comprehensive ceremony as well, with awards for a whopping 116 categories. Yes, 116 – though not all of those are given out on stage.

The nominations for the 18th annual edition, set to go down on June 6th at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, are now in and it seems that Warner Bros. is leading the pack amongst the various studios, scoring an impressive 68 nods in total, 11 of which come from The Lego Batman Movie – the most of any title to be nominated. »

“I’m looking for somebody funny, kind, and smart. I can’t wait to meet the guys and hear what they have to say.”

Those are famous last words from Rachel Lindsay, the first-ever black “Bachelorette,” as played by Sasheer Zamata, in a sketch that “Saturday Night Live” cut from its recent Chris Pine episode. So, wait. Let’s get this straight. Zamata finally gets to star in a hilarious skit about racism and it’s cut? C’mon, “SNL,” even you have to see the irony there.

Dee Rees Working on a Horror Film About a Lesbian Couple in a Small Town

12 May 2017 10:01 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Dee Rees: GoldDerby/YouTube

Dee Rees’ next project will be a horror film exploring domestic life, race, sexuality, and small town America. Originally reported by the New York Times, the Tracking Board and Shadow and Act have confirmed that Rees is collaborating with “Get Out” producer Jason Blum on a horror movie about a black lesbian couple living in a rural town.

According to the Times, the “Pariah” and “Bessie” director informally pitched Blum the idea, which is inspired by her own life. Rees told Blum about her move to a small town: “You’ve got me and my wife, two black lesbians, and when we first moved in, we fought every day over all these little things: ‘Why is this over there? Did you move that?’”

“Maybe it was a ghost,” she observed. “Or maybe it was some other force — like us not wanting to be there or fitting in.”

Blum was intrigued by the pitch and followed up with her. Rees said that she is ready to “make the best possible version of what I want to make.”

“Visibility is great because it shows other African American women they can be whatever they chose to be. But for me, the story comes first. If I’m visible fine, but I really want the story to come first,” Rees told us, referring to opportunities for black women directors. “I stand on a lot of shoulders: Euzhan Palcy, Kasi Lemmons, and Julie Dash. It was great to be pursuing my dreams and hopefully I’ll build a body of work and I will be among them one day.”

Rees’ latest film, “Mudbound,” earned rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Set in post–World War II South, the drama centers on two families facing racism and poverty. “Mudbound,” which Rees co-wrote with Virgil Williams, sold to Netflix for $12.5 million — the biggest deal of Sundance 2017. It stars Carey Mulligan (“Suffragette”), Jason Clarke (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Jason Mitchell (“Straight Outta Compton”), Mary J. Blige (“The Wiz Live!”), Rob Morgan (“Stranger Things”), Garrett Hedlund (“Inside Llewyn Davis”), and Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”).

Mudbound” doesn’t have a release date yet, but is expected to debut sometime this year. Most recently, Rees has helmed two episodes of “When We Rise,” an ABC miniseries chronicling the gay rights movement in the U.S.

Dee Rees Working on a Horror Film About a Lesbian Couple in a Small Town was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story. »

‘The Fate of the Furious’: F. Gary Gray is the First African American To Direct a Billion-Dollar Movie

12 May 2017 9:41 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

You have to savor the irony: African Americans comprise a tiny portion of film directors; we all know the argument that black movies don’t play overseas. And in F. Gary Gray’s “The Fate of the Furious,” we now we have the first billion-dollar movie from a black director…and it was driven overwhelmingly by the overseas gross.

While Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” will be the most profitable title of the year, “The Fate of the Furious” just made F. Gary Gray the first African American to join an even more elite rank: He directed a film that’s earned over $1 billion worldwide.

The eighth entry in the “Furious” franchise currently stands at about $1.2 billion, with more than 80% of that business outside North America — making this the unusual (and welcome) case of a black director’s film making the »

The 33 Highest-Grossing Movies Directed By Black Filmmakers

12 May 2017 9:35 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When a film earns over $100 million domestic, it’s noteworthy but hardly unusual; 30 films claimed that distinction in 2016 alone. When a film directed by an African-American joins that group, however, it’s a different story.

In all of film history, considered by adjusted gross, only 33 titles from black directors have earned over $100 million domestic — a fact that highlights the endemic lack of opportunity. (A 2015 DGA study put all minority male directors at 11.2 percent of studio releases. Minority female directors comprise 1.3 percent; none are on this list.)

Several names show repeatedly: There’s John Singleton with four, F. Gary Gray, Keenen Ivory Wayans, and Antoine Fuqua with three, and Spike Lee and Forest Whitaker with two. And the name that shows up most of all is Denzel Washington; he stars in five of the films. »

Blum saw “Mudbound” at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation and sold to Netflix for a whopping $12.5 million — the largest acquisition of the 2017 festival. When he had the chance to meet Rees at a Sundance Institute event in March, he teared up as he told her it was “one of the most powerful movies.” A mutual admiration society, Rees had recently seen Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” which was produced by Blumhouse, and had similarly nice things to say to Blum.

‘Anne with an E’ Review: A ‘Breaking Bad’ Producer Updates ‘Anne of Green Gables’ for Our Darker Times

12 May 2017 8:18 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Once Netflix decided to change the title of its “Anne of Green Gables” reboot from plain old “Anne” (ugh!) to “Anne with an E,” it proved itself to be a true “kindred spirit” to the poor literary orphan girl.

The beloved character from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Canadian children’s novel “Anne of Green Gables,” on which the series is based, insists upon that particular spelling of her name because of its elegance. That insistence is also indicative of Anne Shirley’s boisterous personality, which demands that she be heard, that people pay attention, that she is special. Fortunately, Netflix listened and along with settling on a fitting title, the streaming service has also crafted a unique adaptation that is simultaneously faithful to the source material in appearance and story, while expanding the story to comment upon the ills of 1900s rural Canadian society. Exclusive: 'Get Out' Stars Allison Williams and Daniel Kaluuya Are 'So Down' for a Lil Rel Howery Spinoff!

Get Out definitely did its job as a horror film when it premiered in February, but months later, it's the movie's comedic elements that people are still talking about -- and specifically how hilarious Lil Rel Howery was as a Tsa worker and Daniel Kaluuya's best friend, Rod.

Et's Courtney Tezeno sat down with Kaluuya and co-star Allison Williams in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where they opened up about the film's unbelievable reception -- and revealed they're "so down" for a spinoff starring Howery.

"He's already on The Carmichael Show, if you miss seeing him," she continued. "He's so good on that show. I love that show... but I wouldn't mind, like, a full 'Rel as the Tsa' spinoff. Throw Sid in there, even though Sid was a very stubborn actor. The dog."

Split 2 Will Have a Much Bigger Budget Than the Original

11 May 2017 3:12 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A few weeks ago, writer-director M. Night Shyamalan officially confirmed in a series of tweets that the highly-anticipated Unbreakable and Split sequel is happening, officially titled Glass, with Universal Pictures setting a January 18, 2019 release date. Producer Jason Blum recently confirmed new details about this joint sequel himself, revealing that M. Night Shyamalan will be given a bigger budget this time around, but that isn't exactly saying much, since Split was made for just $5 million. Still, don't expect Split 2 to be a massive big-budget movie, since its increased budget still pales in comparison to most tentpoles.

Jason Blum has made a career out of making micro-budget films, from hit franchises like Paranormal Activity and The Purge, to this year's low-budget hits Split and Get Out. Split was produced with a $9 million budget, earning a whopping $275.1 million worldwide, but now that he's bringing Split together with the Unbreakable characters, the director will »

Awards Race Disruption: Why ‘Get Out’ and Netflix Can Afford to Rewrite the Rules

Isn’t May a little early to launch an Oscar campaign? Not anymore. These days, it seems old rules don’t apply. On Tuesday evening, Universal marketing turned its “Get Out” DVD launch party into an ad-hoc awards event, inviting awards journalists to its Wisteria Lane backlot to celebrate Jordan Peele’s horror comedy about suburbia gone very wrong.

At $174 million to date (and an expected $50 million bonus rolling out overseas), “Get Out” is Blumhouse horror producer Jason Blum’s highest-grossing film (and his second Oscar contender, after “Whiplash”). And no one is more surprised to be in the awards conversation than breakout writer-director Peele, who is developing seven more original ideas for his new Universal first-look deal. Chances are, he’ll get more than $4.5 million to make them.
