As Cannes turns 70, must cinema adapt to survive in new digital era?

Festival bosses are welcoming TV shows but have banned Netflix films from the Palme d’Or

Some would call it a mixed message. The glittering Cannes film festival has at last opened up its exclusive, roped-off VIP zones to the lowly makers of television drama. And, since the French festival is the proud custodian of the European cinematic tradition, the decision to put premieres of new series of Twin Peaks and Top of the Lake right at the centre of its 70th birthday celebrations is a significant concession.

And yet it might be the last time relations are so cordial. For while Cannes gets ready to offer a bejewelled embrace to TV producers from 17-28 May, festival organisers have announced that Netflix, a leading player in the new era of subscription entertainment, is to be banned from the film competition in future. Unless the company stops its libertarian practice of »

Stream Johnny Jewel’s ‘Windswept’ and Try to Figure Out Which Songs Are on the ‘Twin Peaks’ Soundtrack

7 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Johnny Jewel’s new album “Windswept” is now available to stream on Spotify, and among its 14 tracks are selections from the new season of “Twin Peaks.” We don’t actually know which songs actually feature in the long-awaited revival, of course — that would go against David Lynch’s well-earned philosophy of not telling anyone anything about it — but searching for meaning among hidden clues is nothing if not apropos of Lynch in general and “Twin Peaks” in particular.

Jewel previously contributed to the soundtracks to “Bronson,” “Drive” and “Lost River,” among others. Listen below and see if you can suss out any hints, whether from the music itself or even the titles: “Television Show” might be a little on the nose, but “Slow Dreams,” “Between Worlds” and “Missing Pages” all sound about right. »

Hollywood Expects This to Be the Least Profitable Summer in a Decade

If you’ve got franchise fatigue, you’re hardly alone. Recent box-office predictions suggest that this is not to be a summer of beaucoup bucks, with the Los Angeles Times reporting that studios are expecting to make as much as 10% less between May and September than they did last year — a drop from $4.45 billion to $4 billion. The horror!

The glut of remakes, sequels and prequels is pointed to as part of the problem. “Some of the tent poles are just not as strong this year,” says Chris Aronson, head of domestic distribution at 20th Century Fox. “‘Pirates of the Caribbean’? It’s the fifth one. ‘Transformers’? It’s the fifth one.” Next week’s “Alien: Covenant” is another sequel, with “Cars 3,” “The Mummy,” “Despicable Me 3” and more all on the way. »

’Timeless’ Is Saved! Time-Travel Series Joins Elite Club of Shows Renewed by the Network That Canceled Them

10 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The fans spoke, and at least one network listened.

At first, it didn’t seem like any of the new time-travel series were going to make it out of the 2016-2017 season alive. The CW’s “Frequency” was dead, Fox made “Making History” history, ABC’s “Time After Time” ran out of time, and NBC’s “Timeless” also got the ax this past week.

Cannes 2017 Lineup is High On Auteur Intrigue, Low on Safe Awards Bets

10 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ask just about any critic heading to next week’s Cannes Film Festival for their thoughts on the lineup and you’ll get much the same verdict: On paper, at least, it’s one of the tastiest in years. Usually we speak of Cannes programmes being “front-loaded” or “back-loaded” in terms of major auteur works; this year, it’s simply loaded.

The first two days of this year’s fest alone see premieres from Todd Haynes (“Wonderstruck”), Andrei Zvyagintsev (“Loveless”), Arnaud Desplechin (“Ismael’s Ghosts”) and Claire Denis (“Black Glasses”). The last two days, by which point the crowds usually thin out, have Lynne Ramsay (“You Were Never Really Here”) and Roman Polanski (“Based on a True Story”), not to mention David Lynch’s feverishly awaited “Twin Peaks” reboot.

In between is an all-you-can-eat cinephile’s buffet boasting new works from Michael Haneke (“Happy End”), Sofia Coppola (“The Beguiled”), Noah Baumbach »

‘The Exorcist’ Documentary: William Friedkin Working on a Nonfiction Follow-Up to His Horror Classic

Some demons take longer to exorcise than others. That would appear to be the case with “The Exorcist” itself, as William Friedkin is set to make a documentary about his classic horror movie more than 40 years after it was first released (and, according to reports, scared some moviegoers out of the theater and into the hospital).
