What It Takes to Beatbox in New York City

May 05, 2015 | 10 videos
Video by Jenny Schweitzer

In this short documentary, a young beatboxer named Adym Evans dreams of making it in the Big Apple. Evans, who performs under the name "Verbal Ase," hustles and hones his craft on subway platforms and train cars. Raised as a Buddhist, Evans told filmmaker Jenny Schweitzer that religious chanting inspired him to become a beatboxer. "They say when you chant, you don't necessarily get what you want, you get what you need," he said.

This is the fifth film in a series about New York's subway musicians.
