Democrats groan as Trump promotes new immigration crime office

President Trump's new office to focused on crimes committed by people in the country illegally provoked groans from Democratic lawmakers Tuesday as he addressed a joint session of Congress.

In his speech, Trump said he has called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to create the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement, abbreviated as VOICE.

Trump, who had previously announced the creation of VOICE, has also directed the DHS to publish a weekly list of crimes committed by immigrants.

“We are providing a voice to those who have been ignored by our media, and silenced by special interests,” Trump said to a chorus of groans from Democrats in the crowd.

Trump addressed four people who were invited to attend the prime-time address who lost family members to crimes committed by immigrants, saying that these attendees are “very brave Americans whose government failed them.”

“To Jamiel, Jenna, Susan and Jessica," Trump said, addressing his guests. "I want you to know: We will never stop fighting for justice. Your loved ones will never be forgotten, we will always honor their memory."
