Eli Durst’s “In Asmara” is a profile of everyday Eritreans, but also of the city itself, filled with bustling life and fading fragments.

The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, David Remnick writes.
The electorate has, in its plurality, decided to live in Trump’s world of vanity, hate, arrogance, untruth, and recklessness.

the level of arrogance is unparalleled in my experience. He takes matters too personally, doesn't do well with criticism, and carries himself as the cock-of-the-walk. Bully doesn't even begin to describe him.

America had better take this lesson seriously, because we are in deep shit.

What a year it’s been, folks. Look back at culture, politics, and the stories that shaped 2016.

In nominating Rex Tillerson, Donald Trump is handing the State Department to a man who has worked his whole life running a parallel quasi-state.

Dear Mr. Coll...after your interesting article (in the middle of my ignorance)...I could only ask myself....what is going on?....what is happening to "we the people"...we seeing how our "land of the free" is been twisted, turned, squeezed and abused...how the "nation under God"..is been turned into the land of the most corrupted, the most avaricious, the most greedy, the most controlling, and worst of all we don't seem to see what is happening in front of our eyes...and we are allowing a group to control our destiny and not for the best...I know it's no much I can do; but, I believe that people like yourself and those in charge of our actual government could do something about. ..and I hope for the good of our country they do something before is too late.

The clearest winner in the Hogan v. Gawker case is the lawyer Charles Harder, who has become the de-facto general counsel for the Donald Trump backlash against the press.

Associated with relaxation, indulgence, and gratitude, hygge has long been considered a part of the Danish national character.

There’s nothing in the Constitution about an inalienable right to be sponsored by multinational brands.

The United States almost had its first female President, who would certainly have protected the fundamental rights of women. Instead, we have Ivanka Trump as First Daughter.

What a strange article. Very short, not much information, and the characters that are introduced are quickly abandoned. So, can any of these people afford to live in those depressing suburbs?

Few, if any, of the conservative thinkers who condemned Donald Trump before the election have straightforwardly conceded that his victory was a bad thing.
