Dice Control Course

The History of PARR: The Original Dice Control Course

Highlights of the History of PARR

By Jerry Patterson - The Father of Dice Control

Introduction

It is generally recognized in the gambling community that PARR launched what has come to be called the "dice control revolution." How that came to be is an interesting story and is summarized below.

1980s: Exposure

I witnessed a number of controlled dice throws by clients, associates and friends. However, because of my keen interest in blackjack, I choose not to pursue the study of controlling the dice at this time.

Early 1990s: Evolution

I experienced the longest winning streak of my craps playing career - over two years in duration. During this period, I closely observed the evolution of my dice throwing technique while studying other shooters who seemed to have control. I noticed there was a rhythm in my throw that felt good and seemed to accompany my most successful hands. This was the beginning of PARR or the Patterson Rhythm Roll.

July 1996: Demonstration

My friend, instructor and associate, Eric Nielsen, witnessed a long hand at Turningstone Casino and encouraged me to develop a method that could be documented, demonstrated, exploited at the craps tables.

August 1996: PARR Videotape 1

I produce a Videotape demonstrating what came to be known as PARR for Patterson Rhythm Roll.

September 1996: Dissemination

The Videotape is released at no charge to over 50 attendees of a Blackjack Masters Course Training Session with the understanding that it represents a research project and feedback is needed.

That Saturday Night I demonstrate PARR at the Las Vegas Club throwing two hands in the teens, which were more than enough to convince my blackjack-playing clients to jump into the world of dice control.

November 1996: Validation by Charter PARR Players

Over 80 budding dice controllers attend a follow-up Workshop in Las Vegas and give us valuable feedback regarding their learning process.

Chris Pawlicki stands out at the Workshop with his knowledge of the game, his experience in throwing the dice with some measure of control, and his willingness to share.

Following the Workshop, Chris and I formed a partnership to develop and market the PARR Dice Control Course.

February, March 1997: The Perfect Pitch

The "Perfect Pitch Delivery" or "Perfect Pitch" is developed by Eric Nielsen and Chris Pawlicki (now known as Sharpshooter) independent of one another. This breakthrough became the foundation of the PARR Dice Control Course

July 1997: The PARR Zone and the first PARR Training Session

In my "incredible winning streak" described above, I came to recognize the importance of focus and concentration in continuing to throw winning numbers and avoid the losing 7. I realized right from square one that successful dice control depended on the shooter's mental framework.

We are indebted to Dr. Steven Heller for putting his "Zone Training" expertise into a course format that ordinary gamblers can use to focus their dice control muscle memory similar to the many professional athletes that Steve worked with.

Those Charter PARR Players who attended the first PARR Training Session in Reno Nevada were privileged to work with Steve first hand.

Steve was loved by our students who appreciated his teachings and great sense of humor. The PARR Zone Course is his legacy to all PARR Players. Steve succumbed to pancreatic cancer in late 1997.

The original PARR Course Manual was released at this initial training session in July 1997.

In it, the four original PARR Lynchpins were defined: Rhythm Roll, Dice Set, Betting and Money Management and "The Zone."

Sharpshooter's Lectures were audio taped and the Perfect Pitch Delivery was videotaped.

Marketing of the PARR Course to the gambling public began in September of 1997.

The Course was comprised of:

1. The PARR Manual
2. The PARR Videotape
3. The PARR Audiotapes
4. The PARR Zone Supplemental Course
5. Hands-on Instruction in a Dealer School

1998: The PARR Shooters' Newsletter

PARR was augmented and updated between February of 1998 and Spring of 2000 with seven editions of "The PARR Shooters' Newsletter," edited by Sharpshooter and published by JPE, Inc.

The Grip, Lynchpin 5, was recognized, defined and documented in the Winter/Spring 1999 edition of the PARR Shooters Newsletter.

1999: PARR Team Play

The First PARR Dice Control Team (called Rosebud) was launched with a successful play at Foxwoods.

The Rosebud Team was organized by Sharpshooter and included Jerry Patterson (Long Arm), Robin Frost (High Five), Donnie Bond (007) and Eric Nielsen (Midnight Roller).

February 2000: Marketing PARR - The Book and the Website

Casino Gambling - A Winner's Guide to Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Baccarat and Casino Poker by Jerry Patterson with Eric Nielsen and Sharpshooter was published. Containing practical advice for setting, gripping and throwing the dice with control, the book was an instant success and quickly rose to the top of amazon and Barnes and Noble's lists of best selling gambling books.

The CasinoGamblingEdge.com website was launched shortly thereafter.

Hundreds of craps players found PARR by reading Casino Gambling and then visiting the CasinoGamblingEdge.com website.

July 2000: PARR Email Network Launched

An updated, instructional Videotape featuring Sharpshooter was released.

September 2002: Sharpshooter's Book Published

Get the Edge at Craps, How to Control the Dice by Sharpshooter is published by Bonus Books.

Containing much of the PARR Course Materials published in the original manual, this landmark book responded to the gambling public's expanding thirst for dice control instruction.

Sharpshooter and I both realized that publishing and expanding this valuable information, essentially putting it in the public domain, would expand the gambling public's quest for dice control instruction.

January 2003: PARR Videotapes Enhanced

PARR Videotapes were enhanced and expanded with Sharpshooter's demonstrations of sets, grips and controlled throws and feature slow motion and frame-by-frame for an optimal learning experience;

January 2004: Major PARR Enhancements Published

The PARR Enhancement Manual (PEM) is a landmark manual and contains several firsts in dice control instruction:

  • Unique processes for launching and keeping the dice on axis during flight;
  • Instruction for not only recognizing flaws in a shooter’s controlled throw, but also containing corrective action processes which can be implemented during practice sessions or even during a live shoot at the casino craps tables;
  • Recognition of the relationship of the dice set to optimal betting by using a unique Field-favorable “Super Set”;
  • A simplified release which guarantees the shooter that the dice will be launched on axis.

The innovative learning techniques in PEM essentially eliminate the need for high priced dice control instruction.

2,000 and Counting.

The PARR Dice Control Course, the original with over 2,000 graduates, is still the most cost-effective and best way of learning dice control. Spend a little time browsing this website and I am confident that you will come to agree with me.

Sharpshooter/PARR ongoing research program is leading to Next Generation Dice Control - Off-axis Higher-powered Throws Yield 10 to 14 rolls in the Point Cycle; Available via licensing to PARR Players and JPE Clients only.

Jerry Patterson

Because of his development and implementation of the first Dice Control Training Course in 1996 and its subsequent graduation of over 1,500 dice controllers, Jerry Patterson is generally recognized as the Godfather of Dice Control.
