In Latin America, freedom of expression and the media are tarnished by violence and the intimidation of journalists. Local reporters are especially threatened. The concentration of ownership within an already highly polarized media landscape has further destabilized the situation.
DW Akademie works particularly closely in Latin America with indigenous communities, as well as with young people from marginalized neighborhoods on the peripheries of urban areas. We support community media and local journalism networks, as well as media professionals and research institutes.
In Guatemala, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia, we carry out vocational training programs and have established journalistic education frameworks. Central to this is the strengthening and development of local expertise in the areas of consulting and capacity building. The development of sustainable business models for local media outlets contributes to long-term stability.
