DQ VII 3DS was my first Dragon Quest game & I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed it. Really looking forward to DQ VIII as most people seem to say it's superior to VII.

Woohoo! 8 is the first DQ game I really played (I had played a bit of DWM2 on GB though), and i think it's still the only one of the main games i've actually beaten (because 7 is long, and I really like 6, I think something shiny came up.... probably Pokemon). The only one of the main games I've not played at all are X (did that even come out of Japan? If it did, it doesn't feel like it) and IX, which I really have no excuse for.
I did just beat Builders though, and it was awesome! I started playing Heroes on PS4, but it's nowhere near as good as Builders. But they did bring back Yangus' original VA from way back when (2004ish?), so that's really awesome! Oh and I still have part of the display that Gamestops had for DQ8 (namely, the part with the big picture on it, I couldn't have the part where they stored the strategy guides though, but I got the best part anyway!), I really need to display that |

I'd like to draw attention to the Dragon Quest X localisation campaign.
Dragon Quest 8 for PS2 is one of my favorite games of all time between the vastness of the world, the sense of exploration, and the way it all ties into the story. I had not intended to get the 3DS version but if it has a remastered orchestra soundtrack and two new playable characters....extra ending....more voices....dammit, I'm going to have to buy this too. I just splurged on DQ7 and am about 56 hours into that. At least I have until January to beat it I guess. If I was to point out some negatives of the PS2 original, it was that I recall character/party development to be somewhat rigid & lacking variety (especially in the face of DQ7's job system). You basically put points into skill trees, but levels and SP were at such a premium you were basically forced to min/max everything or ruin your characters. Yangus & his backstory felt a little shaky since they set it up as "go play the Yangus PSP game" - as such, Red's presence in the game felt rather shoehorned in. It makes more sense to have her playable since she was essentially just lazing around before unused, and I'd imagine her and the other new guy are going to add much-needed variety to the party. The post-game elements also felt like they could have been expanded on, and I'm assuming the extra quests and alternate ending are now likely to flesh that out, so overall, I'm feeling like I'll be missing out if I don't get the new stuff even after putting 100 or so hours into the original. |

Now is a great time to buy them. With the 2DS being out, they've never been cheaper. |

I'm totally thrilled that Dragon Quest VIII is here for Western gamers to enjoy!
Now I hope that another underrated franchise that I've interested in will one day see the light of day in the U.S... |
