It doesn't sound like a harem at all, so its above the avegareor not? Answer me. Also, again, are the light novels from this any good or below average? Do they take the message seriously?
Also, where's the animation part in the review, especially when you know that Trigger did this series? |

This is basically the most conventional anime series Trigger has ever done. They still manage to throw in some visual references to their other stuff, especially KLK, but anyone who went into this expecting a "typical" Trigger series with their typical pacing and visual style would probably be disappointed. And yes, it is a harem series insofar as all the girls in the club (and even a couple who aren't) are all attracted to Andou, although Andou himself is a breath of fresh air in that he's not your typical clueless/perverted harem lead. While he unfortunately follows in the harem lead's tradition of refusing to just pick someone already, he's actually a good listener and shows more than once that he cares about the girls' feelings. I thought it was a reasonably entertaining streaming watch, and excluding her comments on the dub since I haven't seen that version, I 100% agree with Rebecca's summation of its pluses and minuses (making Hatoko's rant in the sub version even more impressive is that Hayami Saori performed the whole thing in a single uninterrupted take). It's not a show I personally liked enough to buy, but overall I did enjoy it. I liked the OP and ED too, especially the ED, which I thought was a very clever concept for a harem show. |

It's 100% a harem (although I only watched the first 4-5 episodes, ended up stopping because of that), never straying far from that path. Every character is a typical harem archetype, there eventual development all follow the typical path there archetype always follow. This show start with a somewhat original premise, but quickly run away from it in the comfort of tropes and clichés. If you want an harem show, this will work perfectly well for you, its quite competent at it and visually pretty good, if you don't, stay clear.
Here's a list of character: The nice but a bit weird main character, the tsundere who lust after him and has a brother complex, the dark mysterious loli who just want to be a normal girl, the air head clutz and the quite one. They obviously all fall for him. There's also the occasional fanservice part that make no sense from a story point of view, like when they all get in swimsuits before the camera slowly pan over them. |

You said yourself you only saw the first 5 episodes at most. How can you assert that their development is typical, if you haven't even seen all their development? You haven't even seen Hatoko's rant, which is something you never see from an anime character (the content of it that is). While you can get some stuff from part of the show, do not go around speaking as if you are an expert on the show when you haven't even seen half of it. On a slightly related note, that rant is the performance that I would point to as one of the reasons that I believe Hayami is one of the best female seiyuu (actually probably don't need to qualify it in terms of gender) in terms of acting, though HanaKana is still my favorite. |

To Rebecca: Can ann cover the two latter seasons of Hayate the Combat butler please? I heard that these two are poorly received by fans of the franchise, so I want to know why

I think that decision making is made based on releases not requests. I think such decisions are made at a higher level anyhow. Nonetheless, this is not the place for such requests even if they did do that.

Sounds like you've seen this anime. So does the boy pick a girl or is it just like every other harem anime where he doesn't??? Answer under spoiler tag. |

^From your question, I presume you haven't seen (all of) the show. One of the other commenters here already answered your question. And that was never the core of meiam's argument. I think Rebecca has already referred to how they are more complicated than the archetypes that meiam purports they follow to the T.

Well having just watched Hatoko rant (thank you youtube!), I fail to see what's (I'll put in spoiler tag, but I don't think it deserves it) spoiler[so extraordinary about a character telling a chuuni that they shouldn't be a chuuni and to come back down to earth... pretty sure every chuuni character gets that speech at some point in there show... It could raise some interesting point like why she even hang out with him when she doesn't like it when he act like a chuuni, which he's pretty much doing all the time, but I doubt they go there.] I suppose its possible the show goes off in wildly different way after 5 episode, but I've rarely seen show do that after 1/3 of it is done, and usually when show do that it doesn't end particularly well. But ultimately I leave that to anyone who read my comment to make there own decision, that's why I wrote at the start that what I say is based off watching only 5 episode, if someone believe its possible for a show to start in one direction, follow it for 1/3 of its run time, and then go wildly off course, they may disregard all I wrote. |

Actually people like him should limit to say that they didn't like the show, or they are not invested on it, instead of speaking as if it is the worst because they think they are critics, which is why I think ThatAnimeSnob is not a crtitic. Like some people, he sees the shows that he doesn't like as entirely or objectively awful shows |

Okay, someone posted the dubbed clip of Hatoko's breakdown online so I got a good peak.
Overall I felt the English to be very lifeless in many of the actors, much of it seemed like they were just reading off script for the scene. Hatoko herself felt particularly dry for her brief parts. The only time I felt any real emotion was from her rant from episode 7. While it doesn't match up as well as the original Japanese, it really does feel like the only scene where the actress delivered. So points for effort. Otherwise, lackluster dub. As impressive as that sounds (and it IS impressive, don't get me wrong), some of the best performances have come from single, uninterrupted takes; like this scene from the dub of Sword Art Online: https://www.youtube.com/ Cassandra Lee Morris performed that speech in a single, uninterrupted take. @Skerlly F No all he needs to do is qualify his review as applying only to what he has seen which would be fair enough.
To the man himself, first on your opinion of the rant, you seem to miss the point of why it is remarkable. Putting aside Hayami's excellent acting the reviewer and others here have acknowledged, yes she is saying that he should come back to earth as many chunni characters are told. However, unlike what you see in anime where it is written off as self evidently silly and embarrassing, she questions the very core of chunnibyou, its thought process, naming sense, values, its ultimately half baked pedantry, and more than anything their need to differentiate themselves via obfuscation despite the contradictory and almost hypocritical need to feel accepted all the same. Second, you do have a habit of writing of 2/3rds off a show and speaking as if you know exactly what will happen and how it will be executed. Yes let's let everyone make their own decision, whether the guy who has not even seen half the show or those who have seen the whole thing, including the reviewer, have a better grasp of how the show executes relative to the typical one |

I really enjoyed the series as a romantic supernatural harem comedy and while I didn't mind the inclusion of the "plot"... or an idea that there's something going on... I do think it's unnecessary. Especially since they didn't do anything with it.
Actually, what they should have done is come up with an anime only reason for it, cut all those characters necessary for those two episodes and focused on a smaller cast with a greater idea of conclusion. The idea of spoiler[a great fairy war- complete with real tiny fairies somehow] is fine or at least ok if the plot starts with it but I kept wondering what the real story was as it seemed just as fake as something Ando would come up with. It was so trite, I kind of hoped anything else was the real story/reason. Like if the whole plot took a metaphysical turn and the cast figured they were just characters in some generic light novel series. Nope, I was getting my hopes up. So I had to settle for fun characters, good comedy and well thought out situations both in terms of action and slice of life character relations. And that's enough but it's not a bad thing to hope for something greater though. Sure... light novel... but they don't all have to be unimaginative genre rehashes. Just look at... ... ... Haruhi Suzumiya, really? I don't regret my purchase of it but I have a low baseline for such things. It was on sale and I had money for it. |
