Episode 1:
Best episode so far from any Spring titles I've watched. That was just fabulous from the spoiler[OP song, to Soma's cooking skills, to the actual food, and then to the FOODGASM.] The animation was on par with the expressive tones of the series itself as well. I take the fan service as more of a satire in form of battle shounen/war. Anyways, yeah. Good start so far, I am definitely looking forward to more. The ED song shows some of the upcoming characters. Well, we got a spoiler[major rival (Erina) already.] |

So, I think something really important to bring up as a reader of the manga is that the first 2 episodes are by far the worst offenders of the creepy fanservice in the series. Soma is a great series with fantastic character development, one of the best shonen leads in a long time, a fantastic underlying theme that is handled well, and can be very unpredictable. But a lot of that takes time to build up, and the first two episodes are by far the most in your face on the aspects of the series that will turn people off. The fanservice gets toned down a LOT as the series goes on (It's still there, mind you, but it's less common and less in your face), and many of the later reaction scenes are pretty much fanservice free and far more amusing stuff like lobster rocket launching people into space

Episode 1
Food porn! I will imagine the characters from Koufuku Graffiti eating the food, it would be insane. Well not bad, the whole shounen battle thing done with a situation that is not an actual fight seems to be fairly effective compared to some. I could see it coming that the spoiler[father was going to close the restaurant down only if to make him go to a cooking school]. Now I need to go and get something to eat, and try not to get turned on. |

So, I have serious question. Is it normal that those people look like they're getting orgasm for eating? Maybe I am doing it wrong?

Yeah, about what I expected happened. Anime made me even hungrier than the manga. Those colours, man... Love the colours. This is gonna be harder to watch than Toriko. The DVD should have those scratch-and-sniff cards for the foods prepared.

I am sure if we had Gordon Ramsey's meat in us we would be like that. |

Interesting perspective in this cooking anime.
And very picturesque too.. Other kind of trouble wasn't far behind. That pork roast seriously made me drool. But they are totally overdoing it with the orgasms. Guess the real story begins next time. Will give this a few more episodes before I decide. |

I suppose I may just be easily pleased, but I found this to be a delicious little experience. I've not seen any food anime, and the only sports anime I've seen is Ping Pong, so I suppose this type of over-the-top cheesiness may be par for the course, but my god is it entertaining. Yes, sure, the characters are all archetypal, clichéd caricatures. Yes, sure, the jokes are all extremely low brow and simple. Yes, sure, the animation has visibly low production values. But I don't care. I laughed consistently and was legitimately excited by all the extreme, wanton nature of this episode. I'm thrilled to see the rest.

Episode 2:
Another tasty episode especially in the second half. Never judge a book by its covers especially when it comes to Soma's skills. And this episode also proves that Erina has quite a superiority complex. I want to see her cook some food soon too! The spoiler[metaphoric foodgasm with the angel was fabulous though lol] |

I just posted this on tumblr, but I decided I'm adding it here because I'd like to know what you guys think of it.
So the father says this is like the best cooking school in Japan and it’s super elite and the argument that supports that claim is “the graduation rate is less than 10%”; which means that out of 10 students that get in, only one graduates. Right, so maybe this is a cultural thing, but how is a school that fails 90% of its student body any good? How can a low graduation rate be a determinant for the schools’s quality?? In my Uni, a low graduation rate is considered a sign of a failure in the system. The people on top are constantly trying to come up with new plans and methods to increase the graduation rate because the point of school is to launch you towards the real world, not put a brick wall between you and your future professional life. In my opinion, if a school is failing a vast majority of its own students means that either the teachers or the school system is NOT preparing the students properly. What’s the poing of going to school if not to get prepared for the real world out there? Even if the school is supposed to be super elite and with high standardas, if the teachers fail to make their students meet those standards that’s super fucked up. And if I had kids, I wouldn't want to enroll them in a school where they only have 1 out of 10 chances of graduating, no matter how much trust in their academic prowess I had. Is this a translation mistake, did they actually mean it has a 10% admittance rate? That would sound more like a high quality elite institution. Or is it my perception of what education should be that’s strange? Any opinions on this? |

Damn... rich will be rich.. and rude.
Luckily Souma doesn't stand for it. That school is no joke though. The yuri moment was unexpected. Erina can be such a biatch.. Will give this one more episode before my final decision. |
