while its no arslan let alone moribito , its a pretty decent series for the fantasy anime genre.
also Rial only uses the squeaky tone in some roles where the female characters are in the moe / lolicon types (kon, konoka, index,etc). she should a lot more different if the character is an adult. want proof? consider watching to the dub version of claymore where her take as mira dont have the squeaky rhetoric unlike in some of the younger characters she voices. |

As much as I enjoyed my time with Yona of the Dawn, it is frustrating that it ends seemingly just as it's getting started. I skimmed some manga chapters online and was encouraged to see that later storylines involved Yona and Su-Won coming to realizations about what kind of change they wanted to bring about for their country, as opposed to the hinted-at, implied versions we get in the anime. I can't help but feel that we got the setup to a grand narrative rather than the chance to actually spend some time knee-deep in the story, but hey, I guess that's what the official manga's for. ^^;
I do still like this anime and plan to buy it, I just find the inconclusiveness of it all to be something of a sticking point. Which reminds me, I forgot to post this when Theron did the first BD review, but on the off-chance that Rebecca's seen that too, were the loud audio issues from the early episodes ever addressed? |

The series certainly leaves open what Yona and company will do when they are all gathered together. I keep coming back to the beginning of the first episode. There Yona and the whole crew are driving off an invading army from a neighboring state. There are no official troops shown which would imply she is not in control of the country at that point. I have to wonder is this will be her self appointed task, or if she is simply making sure there are no complications before she takes on Su won.
I think the implied moral ambiguity of both the "good king" and the "usurper" makes this a lot more interesting than many other similar shows. |

Well, it was at least part of the reason. After all, he tells Yona that Il killed his father with a sword.
I don’t know. For me he seems to be just an antagonist.
I dunno about it as well. It doesn’t seem like Soo-won had a lot of options. From the manga we know that spoiler[naighbouring countries were interested in taking over the Koga’s territory and that one of the Tribe generals had been planning a coup for years. Everything that we learn later indicates that had Soo-won not staged his coup, Il would not have been the King for long and the country would not have lasted.] Last edited by Aylinn on Fri Aug 19, 2016 5:12 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Aylinn, I'm reading the manga in JP too so no harm done by me, but all that manga stuff should be under spoiler tags in a forum thread about the anime.

Going only by the Anime, i do feel that the story suffers from ending just when it seems to indicate that it's about to start in earnest. I made the same comments a bit hastily in the review for part 1, but compared to Yonas closest peer story and personality wise ( 12 kingdoms) it just feels incomplete as is, even taking into account that Yona only has 1 cour to work with.

Having read the manga, I can say the mangaka is in no big rush to address many of the main mysteries of the plot. In some ways the plot structure is very similar to Snow White of the Red Hair in that there's a big focus on character interactions and development (but with a little more action-packed stuff than Snow White) - the mangaka admitted in her notes that she wants to give every single character some form of development and/or backstory.
For those of you wondering about Zeno, his backstory takes up its own arc in the later manga volumes (an OVA of this arc will be released soon). |

I'm pretty sure that was only an issue on the Crunchyroll stream. I never heard those issues on the Funimation site or on the blu-rays. |

This show is in my top five, if not my most desired, for sequel. The story feels "lacking finality" or "ending just when it is getting started" because that is exactly what has happened. The faithfully followed the manga with the exception of some minor changes and some chapter ordering (which was to give it a more final ending than it otherwise would have.)
Pretty much all the points that Aylinn made are spot on, though:
I would disagree with in favor of Alan45's contention of "moral ambiguity" about "good king" vs. "usurper" in some senses. Soo-won is by no means a one-dimensional "villain" and I can hardly consider him an antagonist. The real antagonist is the myriad problems facing the kingdom, which both Yona and Soo-won are striving to overcome. (this view is highly influenced by the manga) What I love besides the character development, is that at no time is Yona "robbed" of her victories (such as by being saved, etc.) which is only really evident in the anime with the Awa arch. |

I really want a season 2.
But i'm losing hope, unless of course they announce it after the two ova's. I mean they must be making money on the project if they keep doing OVA's. Fingers crossed. |
