Good to see some old friends in here but seriously-- no Yugi and Kaiba?

Very nice editorial, with some interesting contrasts in the inclusions here (though including Goku and Vegeta as honorable mentions is a bit of a copout, imo )
To be honest, I tend to prefer it when this trope is subverted. Watching through Naruto the first time, I never understood why everyone was so forgiving and patient with Sasuke, as he was almost always extremely cold to everyone around him. I actually tallied all the times Sasuke expressed kindness/empathy towards Naruto or Sakura, and by the time he left the village it was something like 7 and 2, respectively. When I watched HunterXHunter, I was constantly dreading the Sasuke-esque heel turn that Killua would take, but i was pleasantly surprised that this never happened. Killua and Gon completely skip the "enemy" part and are just straight-up friends all the way through. A current example of the "frenemy" dynamic i'm interested in is between Deku and Bokugo in My Hero Academia. It's a bit different from other examples, since the "friendship" seems decidedly one-sided, and Deku's attachment to his middle-school bully and all around toxic person Bakugo isn't portrayed as being healthy. I'm interested to see where this goes, especially given the events in recent chapters. |

Wow, that actually happened? Sounds like a haphazard fanfic fix-it if I've ever seen one. |

Nice article! I enjoyed the analysis in this one.
Some other frenemies I can think of would be, of course, Goku and Vegeta, but they were in the opening picture of the article so I guess that counts. I think Spike Spiegel and Vicious could be up there, too. |

Code Geass always seemed to be trying to reverse the classic rivalry, with the MC being the shadowier, ends-justify-the-means, more intelligent character and the rival being the idealistic, hardworking, (more annoying, to me anyway), friendship-is-power, more shonen-y character. Both massive hypocrites of course. The few extra minutes we see of him in the recently-finished OVAs (Akito the Exiled, or "Kazuki Akane pretty much getting paid to remake spoiler[Noein] within the Code Geass universe and with a much higher budget") probably did a better job of portraying Suzaku as a relatable character than most of the original series. He's ultimately just confused and caught up in his own emotions and needs.

Knowing most of these I wouldn't call them 'frenemies' but rather 'scorned lovers' haha jk.
I'll have to read this later in the day. |

I understand this is Anime as in Anime series? Otherwise, I can't understand why Tetsuo Vs Kaneda isn't there.

Absolutely Hikaru and Akira from Hikaru no Go. Their relationship is like the embodiment of frenemies, even poignant, for while they are rivals, they come to understand each other better than anyone else.
spoiler[Akira is the one that pulls Hikaru (and not Sai through Hikaru) into playing Go, they both inspire each other to get better, and in the end, only Akira realizes that Sai existed a separate person from Hikaru, after tragically, Sai had disappeared, and there was no proof he ever existed. ] |

Love the article. Very well-written and provides great insight into some truly iconic characters. I just wish Jacob had included the relation between Kogami and Makishima from Psycho Pass, if I'm not mistaken he loves the series. I believe it's one of the better examples of such unique relations in recent anime. Last edited by Sacred Blood on Wed Jun 08, 2016 1:26 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Not really keen on the term 'frenemies' . I did not know those 2 in Kill la Kill were sisters.
I can't stand Griffith and Sasuke but I admire Naruto's character for how much he wants to 'save' him. I fall for that not giving up stuff all the time bwahahaha. |

Several good picks in this article that I quite liked! Another favorite of mine was Kenshin and Saito in Rurouni Kenshin. Superficially a similar dynamic to Vash and Wolfwood where you had the pacifist who refused to kill, and the pragmatist who didn't hesitate to kill when he deemed it necessary, but what makes it such a rich dynamic for me wasn't just the ongoing clash of philosophies, but the history and rivalry those two have already had with each other, going back to more than a decade before the series proper even started when they were on opposite sides of the war, and how that still colors their attitudes toward each other in the present.

I haven't seen Berserk, but based on the description of events, I can't agree that Guts and Griffiths were frenemies.
IMO, to be frenemies, you have to have both friendly and enemy aspects going *at the same time*. For example: for a lot of DBZ, Vegeta both respected and was repulsed by/hated Goku at the same time. The ratio of like/dislike varied throughout the series, but it was the existence of that ratio that made them frenemies. Guts and Griffiths went from friends to enemies all at once. There was never a time that either of them had any strong feelings of like/dislike simultaneously. It was one or the other for both of them, as I understand it. |

I don't think Griffith loved Casca, he cared for her but he took her support for granted and knew he had her undying loyalty and admiration. After he gets the daylights tortured out of him, he forces himself on Casca because she was his last venue for reclaiming any kind of status and desirability, but she pitied him too. He considered a normal life with her taking care of him, but he couldn't stand having to depend on someone for the rest of his life. Then it all goes downhill from there. To be honest, I don't really see Guts and Griffith as being similar, except that they both misunderstood how each one saw the other and couldn't open up about it, causing tragedy.

^ Yeah, insofar as he was capable of loving anyone, he loved Guts, but it was mainly in the way you love your dog. When his dog ran away, he went to pieces and recklessly went after the Princess, throwing all his careful plans out the window.
On the comedy side, we have Hijikata and Okita, who are forever at each others' throats, especially Okita who is constantly trying to either humiliate or assassinate Hijikata, preferably both at once. But they always have the other's back in a fight. On the other hand, 2/3 of the characters in Gintama could probably be classed as frienemies. |
