To me SAO and Btooom are fundamentally different genres. In one, you have a character who's a loser in real life who gets trapped in his favorite game, and because he's so awesome at it, everyone around him suddenly realizes that he's the most awesome guy in the world. But Btooom, Doubt/Judge, As the Gods Will, Kings Game, etc., the emphasis is more, "We're trapped in this game, and if I can't convince everyone to work together, we are all going to betray each other and die!" Such stories are much closer to Cage of Eden, The Drifting Classroom and Aphorism even though they lack the game element.

I agree, though they often get lumped into the same "trapped in a game" category. I think that Real Account is much more the second scenario, game notwithstanding, but it does have some elements of SAO in its protagonist, though I hope they won't develop the same way.

There was enough oddly-timed humor in the first volume to make me wonder if this was intended to be a *very* dark comedy.

I have to wonder if you have even really read both stories. The bolded section is perfectly applicable to BTOOM!!!, though just because everyone 'realizes' the MC is amazing doesn't mean they are willing to work with him (especially considering BTOOM!!! will only allow a limited number to survive by design). And despite that, most of the characters who are not insane or total not-so-nice-people end up being drawn to him anyone. And the italicized section is perfectly applicable to SAO, the MC sees factioning, so he sets himself up as the villain to so the factions can work together, and tries to deal with the not-so-nice-people who won't play ball. You seem to think Kirito is well liked because of the fandom and your own seeming dislike of SAO or Kirito, but if you paid attention to the actual story, you'd see that outside of his circle of friends, most people in SAO/ALO/GGO barely know who Kirito is, a number (larger than his group of friends) dislike him, and a smaller number are openly antagonistic. |

Real Account is a hit and miss for me. On one hand the art is nice to look at, some of the challenges are interesting, and the backstory behind spoiler[both protagonists, as the manga switches focus early on] is kinda sad.
On the other hand, as expected with this genre, a lot of people die gruesomely and after awhile you just get desensitized to the gore and the deaths lose impact. And the story gets weird, like really really weird. Not that I expected this manga to have master storytelling, but the sudden changes and reveals later on really had me scratching my head. Overall I guess I would recommend it if you enjoy survival games with a good amount of gore, but it definitely doesn't have the best writing. Just be prepared when things suddenly take a turn in a different direction, as there are some twists that really change everything. |

I was about to dash this off as another "die in the game, die for real" piece of schlock like SAO or .hack before it, or even that movie Stay Alive, but as someone who has more than a couple of grievances towards social media, this actually looks pretty interesting.
And I happen to be a fan of heavy-handed social commentary, provided it's done right. Call me old-fashioned, but I believe that Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped. |

As long as the MC is not Mr. Invincible, this GN trying to imply the cons of social media addiction is a nice touch.

Hmm, so a survival game within a digital world. Seems kind of interesting, but I do want to know how the deaths are handled in this series. Since it seems like a number of characters will end up dying, if they just come off as fodder, I wouldn't be interested.

Heavy handed social commentary does not bother me so much as it feeling like it's the same criticisms against Social Media and The Internet that have been bandied about since the mid to late Nineties. I thought the art was okay

ALDNOAH.ZERO Blu-Ray 4
anime
ALDNOAH.ZERO tries just a little too hard to wrap everything up in a bow in these last six episodes, and while it works, it lacks any major impact.
