From reading the review the basic plot online sounds like any number of bad Dating Sim Manga except this one was based on an actual novel instead of a visual novel. I was half tempted to pick this up because I like romance manga but I need a little more in the female leads than "dream fulfilment waifu" tropes. Maybe it will grow but sounds "paint by numbers"

I hadn't made that connection, but you're right - it does have a visual novel feel. I'm not sure if that's the fault of the adaptation or if the original novel reads that way as well; I should see if there's an English translation of it. The least tropey girl is the first one, so I'm hoping she'll turn out to be the main heroine.

This series is the latest office favorite melodrama, kind of filling in for A Silent Voice. Interesting that you mention how he treats men... Vol. 2 has a great story that treats exactly that topic in a sensitive and moving way.

This has peeked my interest. And I hope it's where they take the story. Being more of an individual and not copping to peer pressure is important, and a story centered around that sounds interesting. |

I haven't got a chance to read the manga adaptation, but judging from the chapter titles of the original novel and her past experience I'd say the author clearly got her ideas from:
1. Densha Otoko 2. Nobuta wo Produce 3. My Sassy Girl 4. Brokeback Mountain 5. Hana Yori Dango 6. My Lovely Sam Soon 7-8. NANA She's a live-action screenwriter, after all; didn't even bother tweaking names so they could look differently. |

I enjoyed it, and I had no problem with this in the story. Mainly because, we're looking at a guy who is thinking back upon his teen years. So, the whole "rose coloured glasses" look to his interactions with the girls was something I was expecting. We only get a small window to see his interactions with the girls/woman, so the possibility is there that this is a very "rose coloured" look through the perspective of the protagonist. I think that, the only time we get a glimpse at the past that isn't through the protagonist, is for the 2nd girl. And, that was used more to reveal the depth of the mistake he made, rather than the fact that he made a mistake. But, I would say that the looks we get through his interactions early on would be...nicer than later down the line. I make that assumption because they haven't shown him date anyone, due to these early stories being centered around females he was friends with. You'd think that with more drama to come, an "uglier" side to some of the females depicted in the series will surface. Of course, if the character believes that any relationship breakdown is all on him, we may not see "ugly" qualities on the part of the females, but just "uglier" ones on the part of our protagonist. Which, personally, I wouldn't find too surprising. As I myself have tended to overlook some things when thinking and discussing over past..events, due to heaping all the blame on myself... Over time, I feel like this series could become hard for me to read. I do see a bit of myself in Serizawa.
Unless MAL has lied to me, this series finished on March 9th and will be 7 volumes in total. They get that one wrong?
This is the path I'm expecting the story to take. Especially since the mystery woman seems to shy away from meeting Serizawa due to him mentioning that he had to apologise for something, even though he doesn't know exactly what he is apologising for. Rather than feeling obligated to meet her because he wants to apologise, it seems like she wants him to meet her because he wants to see her for who she is, rather than as a person he views as a "victim" of his actions in the past. After reading the review, I plan to re-read this volume before the 2nd one comes out. Some details didn't stick to my memory, but I thought it was a very good start for this series. And, I thought that the art may have been the best thing about this first volume. I also had no problem with how the stories were connected. The framing device of "remembering the women from my past" is an easy and broad one. |
