Former world time trial champion Fabian Cancellara has announced that he has signed with the Trek team for 2014. Cancellara put to rest rumors surrounding his future in a video posted to YouTube on Monday.

Cancellara’s RadioShack-Leopard team ownership has sold its racing license to Trek Bicycle Co., effective January 1, 2014. The Swiss classics specialist extended his contract with the team for three years and discussed working with Trek following his retirement.

“We are now working on many things,” said Cancellara. “The biggest thing is that I’m looking excited toward this project for the next three years. And of course the big commitment with Trek for the coming years. Also, after, when I want to stop cycling. Being part of the Trek family is exciting, plus to still ride my bike with such a good company makes riding the bike, I don’t say easy, but how it has to make for being fast.

Cancellara won the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) and Paris-Roubaix in the spring, but is sitting out the Tour de France.

“It’s the biggest sports opportunity I’ve every had, because I want to still look on the sports side on the winning side, because this is what I want to do,” said Cancellara. “I want to win race, not just sit in the bunch and ride my bike.”

Cancellara had been rumored in a transfer to the Swiss IAM Cycling team.

Later on Monday, Cancellara engaged with Twitter users in a question and answer session under the hashtag #askfabian.
