Guidelines for Incoming First-Year Students At Ohio University, we employ a holistic review process in Undergraduate Admissions decisions. Class rank, strength of curriculum, grade-point average, and ACT/SAT test scores are considered, as are optional submissions, such as personal essays and letters of recommendation. To receive full consideration for admission, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions recommends that you complete the ACT or SAT by December of your senior year of high school. A strong college preparatory academic program is expected of students who apply for admission to Ohio University. The grades compiled during your junior year can be particularly significant in the review process, as consideration is given to improvements or declines in academic performance.
Programs With More Selective Admissions Guidelines
Below are some guidelines used to evaluate first-year applicants to more selective academic programs at Ohio University.
College of Business
Students most likely to be successful in the College of Business are among the top 20 percent of their high school classes and score 24 or above on the ACT or 1100 or above on the math and critical reading components of the SAT. For international students for whom English is a second language, please visit www.ohio.edu/admissions/international/English.cfm to learn more about the English proficiency policy.
E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
Applicants to the School of Journalism are evaluated on all the criteria used in the general admission review, and notable media-related talent or experience is given particular consideration. Applicants from underrepresented populations are strongly encouraged to apply to the School of Journalism. The middle 50 percent of freshmen who enrolled in the journalism program in 2013 were ranked in the top 11-34 percent of their high school classes, had an average GPA of 3.67 on a 4.0 scale, and scored 24-28 on the ACT or 1060-1220 on the math and critical reading sections of the SAT.
School of Dance
In addition to general admission requirements to Ohio University, the dance program requires a dance application and dance audition. Acceptance to the dance major or minor program in choreography and performance is by talent audition. Auditions are scheduled to coordinate with various University application deadlines.
School of Media Arts and Studies
Students in the top 40 percent of their high school classes who score at least 23 on the ACT or 1060 on the math and critical reading portions of the SAT are best poised for success in the School of Media Arts and Studies.
School of Music
If you are a freshman or transfer student who intends to major in music, you are required to audition with your major instrument or voice and to take a theory placement test. An interview is also required for prospective music education and music therapy majors. The audition, interview, and theory placement test are scheduled on the same day.
School of Nursing
Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale who have achieved a 23 or higher cumulative score on the ACT or a 1060 combined math and critical reading score on the SAT are best situated for success in the School of Nursing.
Russ College of Engineering and Technology
To best prepare for the demands of the academic programs in Russ College, four years of college preparatory math, one year of chemistry, and one year of physics are necessary. Students ranked in the top 30 percent of their classes who score at least 24 on the ACT or 1090 on the math and critical reading portions of the SAT are most likely to be successful in Russ College of Engineering and Technology.
Honors Tutorial College
Students who apply to the Honors Tutorial College are required to submit additional essays with their applications, and selected students will be interviewed each January to better measure their prospects for success in HTC. A general guideline of the top 10 percent of a student's graduating class and ACT score of 30 or SAT math and critical reading score of 1300 is offered as a measure for potential success in the program.
School of Visual Communication
As part of the application process, students interested in the School of Visual Communication must participate in an interview and portfolio review session in February.
