A few centimetres of hair will make thousands of dollars of difference to the lives of children living with cancer when it falls to the ground at the Mount Beach Bald next month.

Dominion Salt chief executive Shane Dufaur may not lose a lot up top when he shaves his hair for the Child Cancer Foundation but his pledge had already seen more than $4000 raised for the cause.

Mr Dufaur said he could not think of a better cause to support.

With two young daughters of his own, and having lost friends and family to cancer in the past, it was a cause he could relate to, he said. "If I can do a small thing to ease the pain, and bring a smile to the face of kids fighting the brave fight, then that's great."

Now in its fourth year, the Mount Beach Bald set itself apart with its beachfront location as a scenic spot for a new "do". Child Cancer Foundation business development manager Delwynne Hahunga said it was a special event for the foundation and for the community.

She hoped the efforts of 2012 could be matched, after more than $100,000 was raised by the 48 brave entrants.

"That was a pretty amazing effort and if we could match that we could help our families and kids even more."

Tauranga business leaders were often their top fundraisers, she said, with Port of Tauranga chief executive Mark Cairns raising close to $60,000 in 2012, alongside Dame Susan Devoy, who bravely lost her locks for the cause as well.

Zespri chief executive Lain Jager got involved in 2013 and most recently Trustpower chief executive Vince Hawksworth in 2014.

Mr Dufaur said there was no way he could say no when he was approached to take part this year.

Mrs Hahunga said every registered brave shaver helped, and every dollar donated helped the foundation directly support child cancer children and their families.

Registrations were now open on the Child Cancer Foundation website and each registered shaver had a dedicated fundraising page for people to support them on.

Shaving starts at 11.30am on Saturday, March 7.
