Penny for London

Do you get a guilty pang every time you decline a copy of ‘The Big Issue’? Are you keen to be charitable but getting paid minimum wage and a bit of a charity case yourself? Well Boris Johnson and co have a solution with the launch of Penny For London, a new initiative that allows Londoners to donate a single penny to charity each time they pay with a contactless card.

It sounds like a pretty great idea; for every tube ride, sandwich, or coffee you swipe that plastic for, 1p will be added onto the total and given to the Mayor’s Fund For London, which helps disadvantaged children and young people in London. It launched this week and is really easy to get involved in– you just need to register on the Penny For London website, choose the amount of money you’d like to donate per transaction and set a monthly cap incase you go a bit wild on a shopping spree.

And if the warm fuzzy feeling of helping others isn’t enough to make you join in, how about the fact that Boris Johnson has promised that if enough people sign up he’ll ride around the capital on a penny farthing?
