While Mervin Kaye’s Insta-pictures always have the same distinct style, he rarely photographs the same spot twice. He says: ‘I always do some research during my free time for spots that I have not visited yet and try to put my own twist on them.’
We asked Mervin to give us a tour of London via his Instagram feed @mervinkaye.
Out of all your pictures of London, which is your favourite?
‘My favourite London photo would have to be this one, which was taken from More London Riverside. I have an obsession with silhouettes and sunsets and have been doing a series of them for a while now. It’s not a typical London photo but this pretty much sums up my style.’
What’s your favourite landmark to snap?
‘I believe that London has more to offer other than the tourist spots that everyone knows. However, you can never avoid taking photos of these gems. A few of my favourites are St. Paul’s Cathedral, Houses of Parliament, and Tower Bridge. I quite like this photo of Tower Bridge taken during an amazing sunset last summer.’
What’s your go-to filter? Do you use any additional apps?
‘I use a few apps to edit my photos; VSCO, Snapseed, and Mextures. I would say that my personal fave would be VSCO – I especially love the Minimalist Collection Filters. The end results never looked over-edited and the colour tones look more natural.’
Is there a photo you’ve taken that’s been unexpectedly brilliant?
‘I’m so chuffed that my London Underground photos are being received quite well. I’ve started to take more photos from there and really enjoy it. It feels like that the Underground is a whole different dimension and there are spots with interesting architecture or symmetry.’
Where’s the best view in London?
‘I’ve been to quite a lot of high viewing points in London (One Canada Square, Leadenhall Building, Primrose and Parliament Hill, Monument and more) but I must say that the best view yet is from The Shard. It’s just mind-blowing! Definitely a must-visit. A bit of a tip though: don’t book tickets in advance – just walk in when the weather is great for photos.’
