Dance the weekend away at these three great club nights
Clocking off time is upon us, which means it’s time to party like a trooper. Luckily for you, London has more than a few choices when it comes to clubs, so take your pick and dive in. FRIDAY
Memory Box Social First Birthday: Tom Middleton’s History of the Roland 909
Memory Box has provided London with some top-notch underground parties over the past 12 months and tonight it celebrates its first birthday, welcoming back the DJ who played at the first event, Tom Middleton. Back then, Middleton paid tribute to the scene-shaping Roland TR-808 drum machine with an eclectic set, and this time around he’s taking on the 808′s younger sibling, the TR-909: another crucial drum machine in the history of dance music, championed by Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Frankie Knuckles and numerous others. Expect tracks by all of those artists, plus plenty of seminal Detroit techno, acid house, breakbeat, old-school electro and much more, all of it eminently danceable.
SATURDAY
Clear your calendar, techno fiends: Canadian minimal techno overlord Richie Hawtin is in the house. The house being Fabric, of course. Hawtin’s dark, stripped-back grooves are still amongst the best around, so this should be a treat. Fellow techno talents from Hawtin’s Minus label – Whyt Noyz and Marc Fenger – support in Room One, while rising techno talent Joseph Capriati goes on a six-hour deckside mission in Room Two. Epic scenes.
SUNDAY
Oval Space Music: Terrace Sundaes
Bethnal Green venue Oval Space high fives summer with a series of Sunday parties that make full use of the venue’s considerable terrace. The sessions start at 2pm and finish at 9pm, meaning that you shouldn’t be feeling (too) ropey if you need to head to work on Monday morning. Kicking off the series are a fine pair indeed. South east London’s superbly soulful funk virtuoso Andrew Ashong – who’s equally capable of breaking out a guitar and playing a rootsy live show with his band or getting behind the decks to spin a hypnotising live set – and Ninja Tune’s electronica maverick FaltyDL, who could spin anything from footwork to techno to jazz to hip hop. A perfect Sunday session.
