1. Steptoe and Son
There’s a lot more to this gloomy sitcom classic than slapstick and innuendo. Harold and Albert dealt with the social issues of 1960s and ’70s London: social inequality, violence, rampant poverty, the plight of the working class. All from the squalor of a decrepit scrapyard in Shepherd’s Bush, long before it was filled with Australian pubs and mega-malls. It’s touching and often hilarious, although, looking back, ‘you dirty old man’ seems like a pretty unfortunate catchphrase for a character in a BBC TV show. Read the full post…

Therein lies the rub: get down to Jerk Off at the Queen of Hoxton

Posted at 3:00 pm, August 2, 2014 in Food & Drink

Nothing gets the juices flowing like a grill and a pair of barbecue tongs. And that’s just in the relative safety of your own garden. Throw in a competitive element and the sparks can quite literally fly. Expect fireworks on the roof of the Queen Of Hoxton tomorrow (Sunday August 3) as some of London’s finest proponents of jerk chicken clash in Jerk Off 2014 (yes, you read that correctly). Steam trains return to London Underground this weekend

Steam train © Tim Arthur

For the next couple of weekends, Londoners are invited to embrace their inner anorak as once again heritage steam trains charge up and down sections of the Underground.

The locomotives – some dating all the way back to the nineteenth century – will set off from various points on the Metropolitan and Hammersmith and City lines in honour of the latter’s 150th anniversary. Simply choo-choo-choose which time and day suits you and go all misty as you pretend like you’re some suave romantic hero in an old movie.

Check tickets and availability at ltmuseum.co.uk.

Red Bull Culture Clash 2014 line-up just announced

Posted at 4:00 pm, August 1, 2014 in Music & Nightlife
red bull culture clash

People who think music is a friendly and fluffy pursuit for like-minded aesthetes are dead wrong. It’s war, people. And the richest battleground for musical warfare is Red Bull Culture Clash, an annual event which takes its cues from Jamaican soundsystem culture and pits big-name bass acts against each other in front of 20,000 people at Earls Court.

This year’s line-up has just been announced, and sees London grime champs Boy Better Know take on NYC rhyme syndicate A$AP Mob (featuring A$AP Rocky) as well as Rebel Sound, which is made up of sub-woofer punishers Chase & Status, Shy FX and David Rodigan. Battle commences on October 30, with tickets costing £20.

Find out more about Red Bull Culture Clash and get tickets now at redbullcultureclash.com.

Music, food and fashion at Visions Festival tomorrow

Posted at 3:00 pm, August 1, 2014 in Music & Nightlife
Visions Festival

After a sold-out launch last year, Visions Festival hits Hackney tomorrow for round two. It’s a simple set-up: one day, one wristband, four venues and a couple of dozen of the coolest musical acts on the planet right now. There are also markets (one on a rooftop) selling street food, vintage clothes, designer fashion and zines, a tattoo art exhibition and more arty stuff. At £30, tickets are ridiculously cheap for a line-up this good – we’d definitely recommend advance booking, though there’ll be a few tickets available on the door. Basically, this’ll be great and you should go. Trust us.

Check out our six must-see acts at Visions Festival, then buy your ticket sharpish.
