In a city as huge as London, how on earth do you begin to whittle down thousands of restaurants to an elite handful of culinary kings? Well, adding a bit of elastic to your wardrobe certainly helps, as does stocking up on Rennies.

From there, we set off on a calorific quest covering north, south, east and west, during which our writers saw, smelt, tasted (and in some cases, heard) a dizzying array of fantastic food stuffs. We scoffed steaks, took selfies with sundaes and spent an estimated week and half in queues.

And now, finally, the results are in. For the next ten days, we’ll be counting down the city’s ten best places to eat. Now if you don’t mind, we’re off for a nice lie down.

Let’s kick off right now with number ten on Time Out London’s 100 best restaurants list - The Dairy in Clapham. Here’s what we thought:

The look and feel is of a wine bar – and you could happily go here to get your nose into a lovely drop, too, but it’s the food which really gets the pulse racing. The ex-Manoir aux Quat’Saisons husband-and-wife team collect their own honey, do their own smoking and curing, and apply technical skill and passion to every dribble-worthy dish.

The Dairy. 15 The Pavement, SW4 0HY. 7622 4165. ) Clapham Common. Meal for two with wine and service: around £70.

Check back every day as the countdown continues, and don’t miss the big reveal of London’s 100 best restaurants on August 12.
