Exploring all 270 Underground stations, one roundel at a time

Roundel tour of the Tube

We all spend a fair chunk of our lives travelling on the Underground, yet for Mike Turnbull using just a fraction of the tube’s vast network simply wasn’t enough; where trains were concerned, he had to catch ‘em all. Taking just over two months, Turnbull’s subterranean marathon took him through all 270 London Underground stations and, keen to document his travels, he took a snapshot of each and every roundel.Whilst exploring the tube, Turnbull discovered that four of the 270 stations displayed different roundels to the conventional ones found in most (Wimbledon, Barking, Richmond and Upminster in case you’re curious), with Ealing Broadway’s District line platform home to old style roundels from the early 1900s. Mike also revealed some highlights from his journey, praising the Circle line platforms of Baker Street and declaring the Amersham/Chesham sections of the Metropolitan line his favourite segment of the 270 station slog.

Mike joins a pretty exclusive group of individuals who have made the transport trek, which requires the tube to be running with nearly no closures or suspensions – a rare but beautiful feat.

Thanks to the folks over at Londonist for the heads up about Mike’s travels.
