Japanophiles in the know who can’t stretch to an airfare buy a tube ticket to Earls Court instead and get their fix at Hyper Japan. What can you expect? The whole package: Hyper Japan embraces both authentic, traditional elements of Japanese culture and emerging trends, offering everything from food to fashion plus live music and cosplay.
There’s sushi, sake and street food to sample and exponents of anime and manga to check out. Technology stands will be showcasing cutting edge inventions with a performance of Opera AOI (think puppet-robot hybrids) as well as examples of air conditioned trousers, smiley face iPhone chargers and pet emergency evacuation jackets.
Cosplay aficionados will be showing off their costumes in the dedicated photography area. There will be workshops where experienced cosplayers will be offering costume techniques and tips and a COSParade catwalk (spaces are limited on the day so sign up online if you want to take part).
For fashionistas, there’s the opportunity to try on the latest kawaii (cute) looks as well as fashion shows, demonstrations, workshops and seminars. Traditional culture buffs get martial arts, calligraphy, crafts and rakugo (the art of comic storytelling), plus plenty of kimonos.
