The London gig calendar just keeps getting busier and busier, with huge shows announced this week by everyone from elder statesman Van Morrison to 20-year-old rising star Ella Eyre. You can check our weekly Just announced page to find out if any of your favourite acts have announced new gigs, but here are a handful of the biggest and best…

 JESSIE WARE

A silky-voiced London singer who’s tapped straight into the UK bass scene, Ware has collaborated with some of the smartest cats out there including Sampha, Joker, SBTRKT and Julio Bashmore. Her debut album, ‘Devotion’, was one of Time Out’s top ten albums of 2012, and here she’ll be previewing new material from the follow-up ‘Tough Love’ in a beautiful and intimate setting. Tickets are available by ballot only.

VAN MORRISON

The legendary Celtic soul mystic’s more recent output has flitted between blues, big band jazz, R&B, skiffle and folk, but at this special appearance he’s launching a retrospective book of his selected lyrics, ‘Lit Up Inside’. Hopefully that means a full-on raid through his deep, deep discography, including cuts from his seminal ‘Astral Weeks’ and ‘Moondance’ albums. Don’t count on ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, though.

SLOWDIVE

The shoegaze pioneers have reunited to bring their mysteriously drifting, haunting and euphoric sounds back to life. Their first official reunion show, at Village Underground in Shoreditch, was one of the best we’ve seen so far this year, so these two bigger outings in north London come highly, highly recommended.

FLYING LOTUS

Californian hip hop/jazz/avant-R&B wizard FlyLo – alias Steven Ellison – has a record of staging mind-blowing live shows, accompanying his lopsided beats with hypnotic visuals. He returns to London this evening with a new album (‘You’re Dead’) to bolster his set, which should also feature plenty of trippy tracks from his acclaimed records ‘Cosmogramma’ and ‘Until the Quiet Comes’.

ELLA EYRE

Ella Eyre has been catapulted from a guest spot with one of the stars of 2013 (in Eyre’s case, Rudimental) to the British urban pop big league. Since then she’s sung with Naughty Boy and Wiz Khalifa, Tinie Tempah and Professor Green; picked up a BBC Sound of 2014 nomination; and recorded her distinctive throaty, biting vocals for a debut EP. Catch her in a small venue now – it won’t last long.

BANKS

This soulful, downbeat LA singer’s warm productions and romantic R&B vocals have made her a hot ticket – and got her onto the BBC’s often self-fulfilling Sound of 2014 list – so she’s probably a safer bet than most actual banks nowadays. This show follows the release of the singer’s modestly-titled debut album ‘Goddess’.

RIXTON

No they haven’t forgotten to put a ‘B’ on the front of their name – this boy band from Manchester are intentionally called Rixton. Why? It doesn’t really matter, all you need to know is that they look like One Direction impersonating The Ordinary Boys and sound like… One Direction. They’ll be huge, no doubt.
