Photo of the day: the mind-bending case of the twins on the tube

A pair of identical twins on the Undergound.

Seeing double? No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Apparently, this really is a photo of two identically dressed identical twins catching the tube together.

But not sitting right next to each other.

But both doing the crossword.

No wonder the lady in the middle has had to close her eyes for a bit.

Bar opens in the middle of Old Street roundabout

Posted at 4:15 pm, July 15, 2014 in Food & Drink
Old Street Terrace

Picture a relaxing outdoor space in London. Picturing it? Okay, is it Old Street roundabout? It isn’t? Well, picture again, because last week an alfresco bar opened in the middle of Shoreditch’s most famous traffic island. The 500-capacity Old Street Terrace will be showing lots of big-screen sport and is, according to its founders (one of whom runs Spin London bicycle festival), intended ‘to create the atmosphere you’d find in open-air bars and cafés of European cities like Barcelona and Berlin’. Possibly not the island getaway you were hoping for this summer, but it’s handy for the tube.

They open for this weekend at 4pm on Thursday July 17. Find out more on the Old Street Terrace Facebook page.

Have a wave rave at this underwater disco

Posted at 3:15 pm, July 15, 2014 in Fun London
underwater disco

Love going out dancing but always get too hot and sweaty? You’ll have no such problems if you’re in King’s Cross this Saturday night – there’s an underwater disco going down.

To celebrate the opening of a new leisure centre, Camden Council is putting on a sound bath (not the meditating type with singing bowls) in the brand new pool and everyone is invited. Dive in and be immersed in a watery soundscape, where you can bust some liquid moves and generally have a lovely float about. And just remember, sound travels four times faster in water than in air so get ready for an aural assault. No word yet on what they’ll be playing – fingers crossed for Aqua.

Under 16s can party 5-5.45pm or 5.45-6.30pm and the rest of us can play 7-7.45 or 7.45-8.30pm. It’s all free but you need to book a spot. Find out more at lovecamden.org.

8 Hoxton Square: the new destination for dining near Old Street

8 Hoxton Square © Jamie Lau

Naming your restaurant after its address seems like the height of creative laziness. But back in 2012, we let the people at 10 Greek Street get away with it, because their food was just so darn good. Now they’re back with a second site and yup, you guessed it, they’ve named it after its address. And yup, we’re going to let them off again. Of course, it helps that both restaurants had ‘cool’ addresses in the first place. When they’re looking at a site on Cock Lane (EC1) or Swallow Passage (W1), we’re thinking they may change their tune.

Dazzle Ship: WW1 warship has been transformed into a party vessel

Posted at 8:00 am, July 15, 2014 in Arts & Entertainment, News
Dazzle Ship London

Germans: not content with winning the World Cup for the zillionth time, they’re now trying to hide our warships. Or one of our former warships, at least. Under the guidance of Berlin-based artist Tobias Rehberger something strange has been happening to HMS President over the past fortnight. If you’ve found yourself wandering along Victoria Embankment in the small hours, you may have witnessed a crack team of decorators on small boats or abseiling down the side of the ship. More used to covering black cabs with transfer ads, they’ve been coating the ship with a black-and-white geometric design that turns this floating bar into an instant op-art party vessel. Arabica: Levantine cooking like no other in Borough Market

Posted at 1:00 pm, July 14, 2014 in Food & Drink
arabica © Kris Piotrowski

So you’ve vaguely heard of the Levant, but you can’t point to it on a map. Don’t sweat it. It’s simply an old-fashioned name for the region (shaped sort of like a backwards ‘C’) hugging the Mediterranean sea, that once encompassed southern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and northern Egypt. Now just think of being able to pick the greatest culinary hits from each of those countries and stick them on one super-album. That’s Levantine cooking. When it’s done properly, it kicks ass. But what did our reviewer make of Levantine newcomer Arabica?

Read our review of Arabica to find out.
