Feel the love at the Southbank Centre this summer
The Southbank Centre announced its three-month-long summer Festival of Love this morning and the programme is a total corker. Each weekend will explore a variation of love, including Agape – the love of humanity; Eros – romantic and erotic love; Pragma – love which endures and Storge – love of family. Check out some of the festival highlights below and get ready to fall head over heels.
The Big Wedding Weekend
The Big Wedding Weekend will see four mass ceremonies take place in the Royal Festival Hall, so if you’re wanting to tie the knot or renew your vows then get booking pronto! It’s designed to be an alternative to a traditional wedding and a celebration of the recent Marriage Act for same sex couples. If anyone knows any good reason not to get involved, speak now or forever hold your peace. Thought not! August 30-31. Book your wedding here.
Museum of Broken Relationships
If you’re feeling blue from a past relationship, then the Museum of Broken Relationships will be on hand to mend your broken heart. Bring along a relic from a lover past and rid yourself of the ex-factor once and for all. Runs across the festival. For information on taking part head here.
The People’s Sonnets
Simon Russell Beale and Harriet Walter will be leading a mass read-a-thon of all 154 of Shakespeare’s sonnets to mark his 450th birthday. Join the throng and feel the fervour as you read aloud in the sunshine.
Readings will take place in three sessions on Sunday June 1: Queen’s Walk, 10am-noon, Riverside Terrace, 12.30pm-2.30pm, Hayward Terrace, 3pm-5pm. More info here.
Still flirting with the idea of a one true love? Commitment-phobes can hop between exhibitions, installations, talks and performances across the site, and if you meet anyone that takes your fancy, you can share some love-themed treats at one of the pop-up food stalls.
