Watch This Space: The National Theatre’s free festival has moved
What is it?
The National Theatre’s free festival of leftfield outdoor performance is going walkies for 2014, as its traditional spot in front of the NT has been taken by the temporary theatre (formerly The Shed). So they’ve hit on a new idea, as producer Angus MacKenchie says: ‘It’s pretty common, you have the builders in and all your plans have to change, so while our South Bank site is being refurbished, we’re taking our ever-popular season of free outdoor entertainment on the road to visit lots of local festivals and all sorts of new places that we’ve never visited before.’ Watch This Space will be popping up in a multitude of Lambeth and Southwark locations around London this summer, though its main ‘hub’ will be the grounds of St John’s Church on Waterloo Roundabout.
What’s on?
The St John’s programme kicks off on June 27 with ‘international DJ hairdressing’ from eccentric Catalan performance art group Sienta la Cabeza and wraps up with a grand finale weekend at the end of August that encompasses everything from musical ambushes from The Wandering Orchestra to old school acrobatics from Fullstop Acrobatic Theatre. In between there’s pretty much every type of performance you can imagine.
What if it rains?
The performance will be postponed or possibly cancelled if there’s heavy rain.
Can I bring a picnic?
Go for it! No rules at all, and there’s a food market on the church forecourt on weekday lunchtimes.
