The Kohanga Reo National Trust has been summoned to the Beehive tonight to meet Education Minister Hekia Parata and Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples to discuss allegations of the misuse of funding.

Ms Parata confirmed the meeting would take place tonight after the ministers requested an urgent meeting over allegations of credit card misuse and inappropriate spending.

Ms Parata said she would wait until after that meeting before deciding what further action was required.

"We will canvas all of the questions. We need to be assured public monies are being used for the purposes they were intended and we will be seeking those assurances and discussing the investigations that are necessary.''

Asked if she would consider calling in the Police to investigate if she was not satisfied, she said she wanted to give the board the courtesy of hearing from them first.

Dr Sharples said he had not known about the spending issues or allegations until they were aired on Maori TV's Native Affairs. He said it was important to make sure that the movement was protected.
