Kenya mall hostage drama: Live updates

Smoke could be seen billowing from the upscale Westgate mall in Kenya's capital on Monday, as a tense standoff between authorities and an al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab group entered its third straight day. As many as 62 people are feared dead.

  1. Update, 2:15 p.m. ET: William Samoei Ruto, Kenya's deputy president, returned from The Hague vowing to defeat terrorism.

    "We have thwarted many attempts and we are going to up our game," Ruto said in a televised address. "We will defeat them. We will defeat them. They do not deserve to be alive in the 21st Century."

    Ruto said government forces were in the final stage of flushing out the mall attackers.

Update, 12:50 p.m. ET: Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed the country's citizens: "As your president, as a leader and as a Kenyan, I feel the pain of every life we've lost, share your grief at our nation's loss." And Kenya's Ministry of Interior urged residents to stay away from the mall:
  3. Update, 12:46 p.m. ET: White House deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes, who is traveling with President Barack Obama to the United Nations, said the United States has no direct knowledge Americans were involved in the attack on a Nairobi shopping mall:

    "All we've seen are the same reports coming out of Al Shabaab ... but we have to run those to ground. ... We do monitor very carefully and have for some time been concerned about, efforts by Al Shabaab to recruit Americans or U.S. persons to come to Somalia. So this is an issue that has been tracked very closely by the U.S. government and it's one that we'll be looking into in the days ahead."

  12. Update, 10:35 a.m. ET: A report from the Nairobi City Mortuary, where family members are identifying victims of the mall attack. "There were 38 bodies, now only 16 are left," mortuary superintendant Sammy Nyongesa Jacob said.
