5.0 out of 5 stars As nice a folding bookcase as I've ever encountered!
This is a great deal! I went to the local import warehouse, Pier 1 Imports and looked at the similar unit that they sell; it's a piece of junk and grossly overpriced.
This is a HARDWOOD bookcase that comes neatly packaged and goes into place in about five minutes, depending on where you put the empty box.
Like every one of these I've had (way above five), it's...

1.0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding?? Worse quality I've ever seen
We own thousands of books. We like stackable bookcases, and have acquired many over the years. Quality varies, but I've never seen worse quality than these. We bought 4 of these bookcases. The first 2 fell apart right out of the shipping box. We didn't open the last 2.

This is a HARDWOOD bookcase that comes neatly packaged and goes into place in about five minutes, depending on where you put the empty box.
Like every one of these I've had (way above five), it's wobbly until it has books in it and I really would not recommend stacking if it's placed on a deep-pile rug, as mine is.
Read descriptions carefully! There are several of these bookcases available that have particle-board shelves. These also usually have poor hardware and shoddy construction.
This product is a bargain at the price, particularly if you are a PRIME member and take advantage of free shipping.
Incidentally, if you are NOT a PRIME member and you buy a lot from Amazon, I encourage you to join; it will more than pay for itself in shipping costs.

The bottom 2 shelves fell off. Critical screws were missing. The back supports splintered. The wood had extra holes, weakening it. We gently unpacked it. The package wasn't damaged. They obviously shipped junk.

Now, we're out $100 for shipping this garbage. I can only hope they refund it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bookshelf, February 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Seen these for years and finally bought one for an apartment office. Good quality construction. Arrived with one of the "spokes" on the side broken right at the point where it meets the shelf support (blame UPS), so was able to slip in back in place - a little wood glue and it looks like new. The unit tends be a little wobbly, even after filling the shelves with books. Gluing it all together might be an option, if you have no need to fold it up again, which might stiffen the unit. Adding the top shelf might also help. I'd be reluctant to stack these at all unless I could put them on a hard, level surface and even then I'd probably screw the unit to the wall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for small books, June 18, 2012
By
This review is from: Yu Shan 3 Shelf Folding Stackable Bookcase, Natural (Kitchen)
I've owned this bookcase for a couple of years, and I can attest that it's pretty awesome. The shelves are easily big enough to fit most paperback books and even some smallish hardcovers (anything above around 7 or 8 inches and you'll have to store it on the top shelf).

Just be careful with weight distribution -- I put a few heavy college textbooks on the top shelf of mine and the wood bottom of the shelf wound up splitting in two. If you have heavier, larger books looking for a home, you might investigate a different bookcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and well made!, December 16, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Buying furniture online can be a bit of a crapshoot in terms of quality, so I was VERY pleasantly surprised by this bookshelf. It's beautiful, solid wood and made very, very well. It's solid and sturdy and unfolds right out of the box ready to go. I will be buying more of these! I hope they make the mantel available here.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very LOW Quality - Not Worth it, January 27, 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Yu Shan 3 Shelf Folding Stackable Bookcase, Natural (Kitchen)
Let me start by saying that I just unpacked and set up my new bookcase less than 10-minutes ago. I am so deeply disappointed in this product that I immediately went to Amazon to warn others about the extremely low quality. I am hoping I can prevent you from making the same mistake I did in ordering this bookcase.

I am a big fan of the 3 shelf folding & stackable design! We own two units already and I wanted to get a third. The Yu Shan brand was offered at a cheaper rate and I was silly enough to purchase it. (I can't even say, "You get what you pay for." because this unit isn't even worth the low price they sell it for on Amazon. This product's lesson is, "You get something much worse then what you paid for.")

I was shocked at the ultra low quality of this bookcase. When I unpacked it from the box, multiple screws and pieces literally fell out. Upon closer examination, I found that most of the screws that held the hinges and other pieces in place were sticking out of the wood and some had come completely out. I attempted to screw them all back into place but they had been poorly drilled and simply spun in a hole that was too big for them. (So most remain sticking out or missing.)

There are small metal studs that attach the back of the shelves to the sides. These fit flush into brackets on the back of each shelf and then go into drilled holes on the side. The top shelf of my bookcase kept falling down in the back. I discovered that the metal stud on that shelf had not been trimmed properly so it wouldn't rest flushed and simply fell out. I unscrewed the bracket that holds this piece and tried to put in back in place, the extra piece that had not been trimmed, wouldn't allow it to rest flushed and therefore the top shelf continues to fall down in the back.

As I said, most of the screws are already pulling out of the wood and any attempt to tighten them back into place is futile, since they simply spin in holes. Perhaps the bookcase was thrown around in shipping and the force simply pulled the pieces of wood apart, making the cheap screws pull out and enlarge the holes. The screws and hinges are also extremely cheap and make it impossible to tighten up this shaky bookshelf.

If it is so horrible, why not send it back? (You may ask yourself) Well allow me to discuss the shipping of the bookcase. The folded case is shipped in a tight flat box with minimal Styrofoam pieces strategically slipped in here and there. While the box and Styrofoam offer almost no protection for the unit, they do make it next to impossible to remove it from the box without tearing it up. There is an excellent chance that the only way you will be able to remove the bookshelf is to destroy the ultra tight box in the process. By the time you discover how cheaply made the bookcase is, you have already destroyed the very box you will need to return it.

The bottom line is that this is a very popular design and quality units will bring you a great deal of pleasure and ease. But this cheap knock-off looks terrible and is poorly made. Better to shop for a different brand and spend a little bit more than to throw away your money on this one.

Let the buyer beware.

4.0 out of 5 stars Durable, solid wood, but slight stacking problems., July 25, 2009

I have three of these units: one I bought from Target over 10 years ago and it's still in fabulous shape. The other two I also bought from Target earlier this year and we use them as one very tall bookshelf. The pegs did not precisely match up with the holes for stacking, but not to a problematic degree. I plan to buy two more very soon to replace a crappy Ikea bookshelf. I love that they're made of solid wood, require no assembly, and store/move so easily. Very high quality for mail-order, inexpensive furniture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Item, February 2, 2012

I've ordered several of these for use in my home. Stacked two high and three across, they make a very nice wall for books (it's a good idea to drill a hole to anchor them to the wall). Unlike many of the "real" bookcases, these are solid wood (not veneer) and don't sag under a full load of books. Simple design. Takes about two minutes to assemble. Excellent value. There are variations of the design from different manufacturers, but so far all that I've seen have been well made. I was fortunate to "snag" several when Amazon was offering free shipping, which lowered the total price. Be aware, if you order more than one at a time, Amazon will likely treat each as a separate order, and each may come from a different location.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Move A Lot, This Is The PERFECT Bookcase ( No Tools Needed), December 27, 2011

You slide this bookcase from the box and it is ready to load up in minutes. Just open it up and the shelves fall into place, and it's sturdy too! Added bonus you can stack two together and they remain stable.

I was a tad worried when I bought my first 2 that they might not hold a heavy load, (I did not buy them on Amazon but they are the same brand as this one). I own a LOT of books and I needed to get them organized. I have them loaded to the hilt and no sign or drooping shelves after 2 years of use.

I have bought 6 total so far, 4 for stacking in my living room to hold my favorite art books, and 2 stacked together for in my storage impaired kitchen to hold canned goods and jars of bulk stuff. I'll be buying more of them I like them that much.

When you move, you simply unload them and fold them back up to a tidy package approx 3 inches thick and carry one under each arm to the truck or throw them in the trunk of your car. Let's see you do THAT with press board shelving!

Really a great storage/organizing solution!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some what OK, March 16, 2009
Though product is what we were after it arrived severely damaged. Amazon did the right thing and replaced it immediately, however it required a lot more work than either of us wanted to except (we are seniors - and it is heavy and bulky).
