Sir Paul Holmes (1950 - 2013)

Broadcasting legend Sir Paul Holmes died peacefully at his home in Hawke's Bay on Friday 1 February about 10 days after he was knighted for his services to broadcasting and the community. Compiled by Peter Fowler.

About 100 people marched to the HB Regional Council offices to protest a lack of consultation over oil and gas exploration in Hawke's Bay, and managed to hand a letter over to the Minister of Energy and Resources Simon Bridges, asking for a moratorium on oil and gas exploration. Hawke's Bay is one part of New Zealand which gets very dry over the summer months, but in 2012/13 it is exceptionally dry.  Hawke's Bay has clocked up six consecutive months of below-average rainfall to the end of February.  Heretaunga Plains was the lowest, recording 25 per cent of normal rainfall.

The third race in the IronKids Triathlon Series was held yesterday, where youngsters aged between 8 and 13 had the opportunity to hone their skills in a down-sized version of the gruelling sport. Beginning at Ocean Spa, children aged 8-10 swam 100m, cycled 2km and ran 1km and those aged 11-13 swam 200m, cycled 4km and ran 2km.  Photos: Duncan Brown

An Egyptian Belly Dance, Indian and Irish dancers along with kapa haka performances made for a successful International Cultures Day held at Cornwall Park in Hastings on Saturday.
