Zane Korari Mete Lewis has been named as the man who used his partner and child as a human shield.
Zane Korari Mete Lewis has been named as the man who used his partner and child as a human shield.

Name suppression lapsed yesterday for the man alleged to have used his girlfriend and her one-year-old son as human shields against police pepper spray.

Zane Korari Mete Lewis, 22, has been charged with resisting police and escaping police custody.

Yesterday Hastings District Court heard further charges were expected to be laid in relation to the incident which occurred on April 8.

Lewis did not enter a plea and has been remanded in custody to appear again on April 30.

His lawyer, Amit Malik, had previously indicated Lewis would deny any charges stemming from the alleged incident involving his girlfriend and the infant, which made headlines around the country.

Lewis first appeared in court on April 9 and was granted interim name suppression. Mr Malik said publication of his name would cause "him and his family significant hardship".
