My wife and I booked a table here on a deal voucher that I bought. The staff were very good, friendly and attentive and everything seemed to run smoothly right from the booking to table service which can be quite rare these days. We had 3 courses each with matching wines and each dish was perfectly prepared. Highlights were the Atlantic scallops, Duck confit, Eye fillet and the creme brulee was excellent. Comfortable stylish decor and intimate table setting made for a memorable night…will be back and can highly recommend.

We visited the Sale St. Bistro using a deal voucher which got you any three courses from the menu. The menu is simple with 4 choice for each course which I like as it shows that they’re not stretching themselves.

For starters I had Crispy Pork Belly with Cauliflower cream, caramelized apples, crème fraiche. My partner had Alaskan Crab Ravioli with a Saffron butter sauce. Both were really good starters that would not be out of place at any top restaurant in Auckland. The pork belly was possibly the best that I’ve ever eaten. The ravioili sauce was superb and the pasta just about thin enough.

The mains I had the Beef Fillet Mignon with Truffled shiitake potato cake, baby leeks, chasseur sauce. My partner had the Roast Rack of Lamb with Pancetta, summer vegetables, mint béarnaise sauce. Unfortunately my beef fillet was tough which is disappointing given its the most tender cut. Given the colour throughout it was almost definitely plucked straight from the fridge and cooked before being allowed to rest. However, it was very tasty and the potato cake was amazing. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the sauce was surprisingly well matched. It just lacked some addition veg as the summer vegetables were meagre.

For dessert I had the Frozen Toblerone Mousse and my partner had the Blackcurrant & Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta. Both were of pretty good standard but didn’t really set our taste buds on fire.

The atmosphere in Sale St. was really good and the décor is really nice (if a little too cluttered), which was enough to earn it the 4 stars. Overall, we would probably go back.

The staff were attentive
We arrived at our 6 o’clock booking to be told that they weren’t ready for 10 minutes which was disappointing!

I went here for lunch on a Sunday. Lovely outside deck and really lovely set up. I ordered the Moroccan chicken burger. When I got it it was covered in something like a tandoori mix that I bought once in the supermarket to smother over my chicken. It had no flavour and was dry – I had to put mayonaise and tomato sauce on it to get some moisture. Really terrible for the $20 I paid for it. Saving grace was the handcut chips – really good. Won’t go back for food again – but good for a drink.

A friend and I went to the Hops vs. Grapes night as part of the Auckland Restaurant Month festival. We were given 3 courses and a choice of the beer vs wine match and had to vote which was better matched to the food. The cost was $85pp. What a fantastic idea!
The food itself was i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e, so I absolutely recommend trying out Sales St Bistro regardless of the event.
We were spoilt with an amazing set menu plus matched drinks of BOTH beer and wine (hefty servings, I might add *hiccup*). The beer was from the brewery on site – 1010. Disclaimer: I had not had even a sip of beer in over 4 years – as I normally don’t like it BUT, well, 1010, you have turned me!
We had a ‘blackened’ salmon to start, which was cooked to perfection. Just cooked and heavily seasoned. With this, we had a choice of the 1010 Hot Throat Chilli Lager vs the Matawhero Chard ’11. I voted for the chardonnay on this round. Next up was a crusted venison, but as I’m not uber excitable about venison, I can’t really judge this meal. Same went for my dinner buddy. However the Aucklandian Pale Ale was a winner over the Matawhero Merlot (shock, horror). Don’t get me wrong, the vino was gorgeous, I just enjoyed the beer better with the venison.
The best part was dessert….Sticky Toffee & Valrhona Tart with lots of prefect dulche de leche YUMMMMM!! Served with either a Matawhero Viognier ’09 or the 1010 Xmas Pudding Ale. Ok hats off to the legend who made that Ale. Add a super sweet dessert whilst drinking the Xmas Pudding, and yup my forgotten beer cogs started turning again.
The service was excellent (but there were lots of extra hands for the event I can only assume) and we certainly stumbled home with happy tummies :)
I can’t wait for the next one!

I had to check out the new menu at sales street, and was not disappointed. The worst bit about the visit was having to choose, everything looked so delicious on the menu.

We were not disappointed. Highly recommend the scallop entree. The duck was the best I had ever tasted, and the desert menu had some unique and delicious offerings. The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and polite.

I couldn’t recommend highly enough, and I will be back.
