The first time Rebel Wilson crossed paths with fellow Aussie Russell Crowe, he told her to "f*** off".

Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Wilson says she saw Crowe and Nicole Kidman having dinner in Sydney.

Wilson had been awarded the Nicole Kidman Scholarship at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), which paid for her to fly to New York and study comedy.

So naturally, when she saw Kidman, Wilson went up to speak to her.

"I go, 'OK now's my chance, I'm going to say thank you'," she told Leno.

"But before I could say anything Russell Crowe just turns to me and says, 'f*** off'.

"So I just put my head down and walked away. But thanks Nicole."

Wilson's interview with Leno comes several days before her gig hosting the MTV Movie Awards on April 14 on Los Angeles.

She said the experience is pretty "full-on".

"I haven't really hosted anything before except for my own intervention for addiction to hard cheeses," Wilson joked.

The awards show will see Wilson mingling with some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

But she says out of all the "massive mama celebrities" attending, she's most excited to meet Brad Pitt.

"I've only met him once before," she said.

"OK, I didn't really meet him I just kind of stood behind him and smelled his hair.

"It smelled really good."
