A man is in a serious but stable condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital this morning after the vehicle he was in plunged about 200 metres from Te Mata Peak in Havelock North.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at about 8:30pm and, approaching from Waimarama Rd, found the man at about 9.20pm well above the wreckage of this vehicle .

The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter winched him from the scene and flew him to Hawke's Bay Hospital.

No other person was in the vehicle.

A witness said the car "bounced end over end about three or four times" before coming to rest.
